The real cost to manufacture a PCB encompasses everything that goes into making the product: the materials and other value-added supplies, machine and personnel costs, and most importantly, your quality. A hard look at real costs seems wholly appropriate.
Alternate Metallization Processes
Traditional electroless copper and electroless copper immersion gold have been primary PCB plating methods for decades. But alternative plating metals and processes have been introduced over the past few years as miniaturization and advanced packaging continue to develop.

2015 HKPCA & IPC Show to Highlight Sustainability in the PCB Industry
November 2, 2015 | IPCEstimated reading time: 8 minutes
The China’s Environmental Protection Law received the first significant revision after 25 years’ implementation. (There were only two clauses out of the whole law not being revised.) The new environmental law empowers the Environmental Law Enforcement Department to execute new measures such as penalty on a daily basis, sequestration, suspension of enterprises operation, etc. The new law enforcement, known as the most stringent environmental protection law, means all crimes against environmental pollution shall be undergone judicial proceedings for pursuing criminal responsibilities. This is a challenge for enterprises and the governmental departments. From 2014 to 2015, there were more than ten environmental laws and regulations promulgated and implemented; such intensity of legal actions was stronger than that of previous year.
Environmental protection has become a basic national policy. The implementation of new environmental laws has imposed considerable stress on enterprises. Apart from penalty, in breach of environmental law resulting in production termination of enterprises for rectification may directly affect the normal production activities of enterprises. Enterprises generally agree that they must comply with the national laws and regulations and of course no exception for the environmental laws and regulations. It is a trend that environmental protection requirements are becoming stricter.
Indeed, there are quite a number of PCB manufacturers with strong social responsibility, earnestly safeguarding the environmental quality. For example, many factories in Huizhou, Guangdong province have been certified as clean manufacturing plants while some inland subsidiary companies of South China manufacturers have been rated as the national level 1 clean production. Besides, some enterprises clearly stated that the more stringent environmental requirements by the government, the more advantageous to those responsible enterprises. On one hand, it is hard for illegal companies to survive under the new circumstance; on the other hand, the law-abiding companies can enhance the utilization of materials and energy efficiency through energy-saving and emission-reduction. Investments on environmental protection directly strengthen enterprises' competitiveness.
Meet the Cleaner Production Partnership Programme (CP3) at the 2015 International Printed Circuit & APEX South China Fair
To encourage and facilitate Hong Kong-owned factories operating in Guangdong and Hong Kong to adopt cleaner production technologies and practices, the Environmental Protection Department launched the Cleaner Production Partnership Programme (CP3) in collaboration with the Economic and Information Commission of Guangdong Province (GDEIC) in April 2008. A funding of HK$143 million has been input for the CP3. Eligible factories can apply for the funding support for: On-site Improvement Assessment Projects, Demonstration Projects, and Verification Services. In the light of the environmental benefits brought by the Programme, the EPD has extended the Programme for another five years to 31 March 2020 with an additional funding of HK$150 million.
Environmental technologies verified by the CP3 will be shown. at the 2015 International Printed Circuit & APEX South China Fair (2015 HKPCA & IPC Show). Besides, there will be specific session discussing environmental topics at the international conferences during the show days. Through these activities, visitors not only can have better understanding on the update environmental policies and laws in China, they can also locate suitable green production technologies to resolve issues on waste water and waste emission for complying with national standards. Last but the least, different sources and solutions for energy-saving, reducing loss of raw materials or water-conserving can be founded so that visitors can achieve the goal of recycling production with energy-saving and emission-reduction.
2015 HKPCA & IPC Show is the world's largest and most influential exhibition for PCB and electronics assembly sector. This year’s edition will be presented from 2-4 December 2015, at Halls 1, 2 & 4 of the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Shenzhen, China. This annual spectacle will boast over 50,000 square meters of show floor area, offering more than 2,500 booths of exciting innovations and cutting-edge products.
Compared to its previous installment, the 2015 Fair will see the new addition of Hall 4, taking up a total of three main exhibition halls at the convention center and a gross area of more than 50,000 square meters, making it the biggest Fair in the show’s 13 years’ history. The three-day exhibition will bring together more than 500 exhibitors from 15 countries and regions, presenting a myriad of the most innovative and leading technologies in the PCB and electronics assembly field from around the world. Visitors to the show can see a wide range of equipment, technologies and solutions, to cater to the entire supply chain in the PCB and electronics assembly industry, including PCB manufacturers, equipment and raw material suppliers for PCB and electronic assembly, electronics assembly applications and environmental protection equipment, presenting a comprehensive one-stop shopping platform.
"Green Pavilion" makes green production a new normal for PCB industry
As green production has increasingly become a typical configuration for PCB manufacturing, in addition to the implementation of national policies on environmental protection, a "Green Pavilion" has been established since 2012 so as to go along with the trend of clean production. With a whole host of innovative green energy technology, new materials and energy-saving production methods, we hope to help more enterprises to carry out green production. Nowadays, more and more factories are increasing investment on environmental protection. Based on the survey to South China PCB manufacturers, the investment on environmental protection equipment only accounted for 4% of all capital expenditures in 2013; however, the 2014 total investment increased by 127% on year and the total capital ratio also increased by 2.5 times to 14%. Environmental technologies, materials, and equipment suppliers such as NewSource, Villo, Honhua, ES, Zhi Bao, VICDI, BF & Yeitek, Yuhuan Clangsonic, Yuanchen, Concord, Ryosei, Slemon, Bangdi, Jie Yu, Pure Crea Tiva, QIXINTIANZHENG, FENGTELI, C&G, Fordcun, Sout Hwand etc. will be present in "Green Pavilion" this year.
Besides environmental protection, smart automation is another hot topic in the manufacturing industry. The 2015 show will for the first time introduce a new “Smart Automation Zone” - a major highlight at this year’s showcase that gathering various automation suppliers to present innovative industrial automation technologies and equipment. "Smart Automation Zone" is expected to help visitors to know how automated equipment improving production efficiency and creating a truly intelligent production that saves labor costs.
A place where industry experts and enterprise leaders get together for an in-depth sharing of environmental insights and the latest industry trends
Environmental protection and energy-saving is the basic assurance of sustainable development for the PCB industry. The key to succeed in long-term depends on the courage to embrace innovative environmental technologies and concepts.
