According to IDC’s Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) or APEJ Public Sector IT Spending Forecast, 2016–2021, the region is on track to spend $25.3 billion in 2017. IDC expects APEJ Public Sector's IT spending to increase over the five-year forecast period of 2016-2021, reaching US$31.4 billion in 2021 with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5%. This growth is attributed to intensifying digital transformation programs led by APEJ Public Sectors to bring about greater socioeconomic growth with innovative technologies.
“In 2017, social protection represents the largest IT spending in APEJ Public Sector function, particularly in Australia. Interestingly, the leading drivers of IT investments in the APEJ Public Sector are related to bringing about better operational outcomes through cost reduction and IT consolidation initiatives,” says Gerald Wang, Head, IDC Asia/Pacific Government and Education Insights.
Government cloud is an important technology pillar to enable open data platforms required in many government transformation projects today. This is especially true for sub-public sector verticals such as transport, public safety, urban planning, utilities and public works, healthcare and education.
Wang adds, "Attaining better manageability tools for effective real-time decision making will help sustained digital transformation for public e-services and boost better personalization, use experience, transparency and accountability for all public-sector stakeholders. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, next-generation analytics tools, IoT, robotics, augmented and virtual reality, as well as next-generation cybersecurity solutions that span from identity access management tools to command centers, has contributed to the steady increase in IT spend of APEJ Public Sectors from 2016 to 2021."
