Engineering Economics
The real cost to manufacture a PCB encompasses everything that goes into making the product: the materials and other value-added supplies, machine and personnel costs, and most importantly, your quality. A hard look at real costs seems wholly appropriate.
Alternate Metallization Processes
Traditional electroless copper and electroless copper immersion gold have been primary PCB plating methods for decades. But alternative plating metals and processes have been introduced over the past few years as miniaturization and advanced packaging continue to develop.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: 10 Rules of the Game
No matter how many times I visit potential customers, I never tire of giving them advice on global sourcing. It also never surprises me that they usually know very little about the subject. They think they do, but once we discuss the idea of buying products offshore, they have many misconceptions. This made me think that there needs to be some sort of primer or a set of guidelines on the subject.
When sourcing products globally, the process is more intricate than simply finding the best price. It involves considering various factors to ensure quality, compliance, and long-term viability. Here's a list of 10 critical aspects to look for when buying products globally:
Supplier Reliability
The foundation of any global sourcing endeavor is a dependable supplier. Investigate their track record for consistency in quality, timely deliveries, and their ability to meet contractual obligations. Long-term partnerships are built on trust, so choosing a reliable supplier is key.
Quality Control Standards
Every market has different expectations for quality. Ensure that the supplier has rigorous quality control measures in place that align with international standards. This includes inspecting their facilities and understanding their processes for addressing defects or inconsistencies.
Compliance
Compliance is often overlooked and not always by those new to global sourcing. People forget about local and international regulations. Navigating the regulatory landscape is crucial when sourcing globally. Ensure that the products comply with both the regulations in the country of origin and the international standards in your target markets. This includes understanding import/export laws, certifications, and environmental regulations. This should be filed under ”boring but critical.” You need to know the rules of the game no matter what country you are in. What may be no big deal in one country could see you fined or jailed in another.
Cultural Compatibility
Cultural nuances can significantly impact business relationships. Understanding and respecting the cultural practices of your suppliers can lead to smoother negotiations and stronger partnerships. It also helps align expectations and reduce misunderstandings.
Logistics and Lead Times
Global sourcing often involves complex logistics. Consider the shipping routes, potential delays, and how lead times will affect your supply chain. It's essential to plan for contingencies, such as political instability or natural disasters, which could disrupt supply lines.
Cost Transparency
The lowest price isn't always the best deal. Be aware of all the costs involved, including tariffs, taxes, shipping, and potential hidden fees. Cost transparency helps to assess the total landed cost and avoid unexpected expenses. It’s essential to figure out the total costs of your product because something that might look like a bargain can end up being a money pit in tariffs and customs duties.
Currency Fluctuations
The global economy is constantly shifting, and currency fluctuations can significantly impact the cost of goods. It's important to have strategies in place to manage currency risks, such as hedging or negotiating, in a stable currency. Don’t forget some people make an excellent living by playing with currency fluctuations.
Sustainability Practices
As sustainability becomes a key concern for consumers and governments alike, it's essential to consider your suppliers’ environmental and social practices. Ensure that they follow ethical labor practices and minimize environmental impact, which can also enhance your brand’s reputation. This is a button that is only going to get hotter (pun intended) with time. You must prioritize dealing with countries, companies, and suppliers that take sustainability practices as seriously as your customers.
Communication and Language Barriers
Clear communication is vital. Ensure that language barriers do not impede your ability to understand and convey essential details. Regular and clear communication helps prevent mistakes and ensures both parties are aligned.
Technology Integration
In today’s digital age, the ability to integrate technology into the sourcing process offers a significant advantage. Look for suppliers who are adept at using digital tools for order tracking, quality control, and communication. This can lead to greater efficiency and transparency in the supply chain.
In global sourcing, success lies in the details. By paying attention to these 10 factors, you'll be better equipped to make informed decisions that not only secure the best products but also build strong, lasting partnerships with your global suppliers.
