Mentor, a Siemens business, today announced the winners of its third annual Don Miller Award for Excellence in System-Level Thermo-Fluid Design. The award is named after Don Miller, former research director for British Hydromechanics Research (now BHR Group) in the U.K., and author of Internal Flow Systems, whose book serves as the foundation for the Mentor FloMASTER software technology. The 2017 Don Miller Award winners were selected for their demonstration of excellence for a range of thermo-fluid design applications.
Award submissions were received from all over the world including entries from India, Korea, and Australia. First place and two runners-up award recipients comprised thermo-fluid applications for waste water reclamation, gas turbine blade cooling, and fueling of a space launch vehicle. Hwayoung Oh and Sunil Kang from the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and Jaejun Lee, Sangmin Park, and Eun Sang Jung from Hyundai Heavy Industries received the first place award for their team design. Their paper, Analysis on the Filling Mode of Propellant Supply System for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle was published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Propulsion Engineers. Their analysis used a FloMASTER simulation model to verify the fueling scenarios to be used for fueling the Korean NARO satellite launch rocket.
Two runners-up were selected by the panel of judges, which included Don Miller. Jurgen Sprengel from JS Pump and Fluid System Consultants in Australia received the award for a complex application of the FloMASTER tool used to understand the water hammer and distribution issues that can occur in waste water reclamation system. The application was described in Mentor’s Engineering Edge publication article, FloMASTER for Water Treatment Plant Hydraulic Simulations. The second runner-up award was given to the team of Batchu Suresh, V Kesavan, Ainapur Brijesh and S. Kishore Kumar from Gas Turbine Research Establishment, in Bangalore, India. Their investigation on the interaction between the internal geometry and the internal air flow cooling of gas turbine rotor blades was conveyed in their article, Heat Transfer and Flow Studies of Different Cooling Configurations, for Gas Turbine Rotor Blade Magazine.
“We are impressed by the broad range of submissions from our FloMASTER customers from around the world this year, as we congratulate the 2017 winners of the award,” stated Roland Feldhinkel, general manager of the Mentor Mechanical Analysis Division. “The entries show the enormous range of applications and innovations achieved by using our FloMASTER technology.”
