Qualcomm RF360 Europe GmbH is Working to Reduce its Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Munich, Germany

Qualcomm RF360 Europe GmbH continues to make progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with Qualcomm Incorporated’s 2030 and 2040 climate goals. Efforts include optimization of manufacturing processes and upstream and downstream supply chains, as well as renewable sources of electricity and biogas.
Ulrich Bauernschmitt, Senior Vice President, Operations, Qualcomm Germany RFFE GmbH and managing director of the Munich plant, said: “Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and looking at our impact on the environment is a priority for us, which is why we are working to secure a long-term renewable energy agreement to reduce our footprint and advance the decarbonisation of electricity generation in Europe. These measures are only part of a comprehensive environmental programme.”
The RF360 Europe GmbH site in Munich is a significant part of Qualcomm’s European operations and employs approximately 1400 specialized staff. With research, development, and manufacturing sites across Germany, Qualcomm RF360 Europe GmbH is enabling cutting-edge 5G technology and general mobile high-tech across Europe. The organization cooperates globally with manufacturers in the mobile phone, Wi-Fi, computer, IoT and automotive sectors among others, supplying a portfolio of RF filters and RF front-end modules.
As a leading technology company, Qualcomm RF360 Europe GmbH is committed to social responsibility and is working to replace input materials that are detrimental to the environment with low-impact alternatives and to reduce remaining harmful pollution using the latest air purification and wastewater treatment systems.
Several technical measures have already been implemented across the Munich site in 2022. These include installing two ammonia wet scrubbers, which have reduced emissions and odours significantly. Also, the site’s combined heat and power plant has been shut down to reduce the consumption of natural gas. Following intensive development work in 2022, our wafer coating process now uses an environmentally friendly alternative to a special process gas to help reduce CO2 emissions. This effectively saves more than 38,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. We believe Qualcomm RF360 Europe GmbH is one of the first manufacturers of high-frequency filters worldwide to do this.
Qualcomm RF360 Europe GmbH was awarded the “Ökoprofit” certificate by the City of Munich, which was presented to selected companies at an official ceremony in November 2022. “Ökoprofit” is a voluntary cooperation project between municipalities and local businesses and is carried out in cooperation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Munich Waste Management Company of the Munich University of Applied Sciences and the Stadtwerke München GmbH (SWM). “Ökoprofit” serves to reconcile ecology and economy through smart ideas and modern innovations.
