GÖPEL electronic: Environmental Protection in the Workplace - Certified Responsibility for Greater Sustainability
December 1, 2023 | GÖPEL electronicEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
Progressing global warming, increasing environmental pollution and resource bottlenecks make sustainable management an urgent necessity. Having been responsibly committed to a clean environment for many years, GÖPEL electronic GmbH has taken an important step towards greater climate protection by obtaining its initial certification in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001:2015.
"A significant milestone was the establishment of our internal environmental management team, which coordinated and refined existing and new measures, ideas, and requirements. We set up our environmental management system smoothly and with the highest level of commitment to successfully achieve the objectives of the certification," says Elisa Richter, Environmental Management Manager at GÖPEL electronic. "The clearly defined targets for improving environmental performance and the regular review of targets are key aspects of this globally recognised standard that we want to meet. We are committed to act in an environmentally friendly and resource-conserving manner in all our business activities, products, and services," she adds.
Specific courses of action have been identified, evaluated, and implemented in order to promote environmental protection within the company. For example, a climate control system has been integrated for several years, which has been cooling production and office spaces with cold groundwater since 2009. In addition, GÖPEL electronic obtains all its electricity from renewable energy sources.
Another outstanding aspect is the holistic realisation of all processes at a single location. The entire process, from development to production and sales, takes place within the company. In addition, GÖPEL electronic has been operating its own milling centre on site since 2009 to meet the high demand for milled parts and to maximise flexibility in production planning with the shortest possible delivery routes.
Short transport routes are another key to minimising our CO2 footprint. Around 90 per cent of all components and assemblies come from the Thuringia, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt region. Another important goal is to minimise the amount of packaging material as much as possible. Already today, we are actively focussing on the reuse of materials from suppliers, which greatly reduces the need for additional packaging. Furthermore, environmentally friendly returnable containers from suppliers are favoured in order to achieve sustainability goals.
"The measures that have been implemented thus far, along with the planned additional initiatives, signify our strong dedication to assuming responsibility for our impact on the environment and society." emphasises Richter. "Climate protection and sustainability are close to our hearts, and it is our duty to support our dedicated employees. At the same time, we will increasingly support our partners and customers in making their contribution to a better environment." she adds.
GÖPEL electronic develops and manufactures innovative electrical test and measurement equipment, automated optical and x-ray inspection systems, and specialized functional test equipment for the electronics industry. GÖPEL electronic has four business units:
- Automotive Test Solutions,
- Embedded JTAG solutions,
- Inspection solutions AOI-AXI-SPI-IVS, and
- Industrial function test.

April Issue of I-Connect007 Magazine: Beyond the Rulebook
04/14/2026 | I-Connect007 Editorial TeamIn this month’s I-Connect007 Magazine, we asked PCB designers, fabricators, and suppliers what it really means to operate without a rulebook. Their perspectives vary, especially between seasoned designers and experienced fabricators, but a common thread emerges: progress depends on pushing boundaries and finding a way forward, even when the path isn’t clear. In many ways, this mindset has always been part of what we do, whether we’ve called it that or not.
Defense Speak Interpreted: Hypersonics Report Back After Six Years of Silence
04/07/2026 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak InterpretedIt’s been six years since my Defense Speaks column about hypersonic weapons. Back then, these weapons were the most sought-after technology as there was little defense for them. They were the cornerstone of the “strike any location on earth within one hour” scenario. Of course, the war in Ukraine, and now the action in Iran, have grabbed the weapons headlines, but hypersonics still play a role and development continues. Here is the update.

Punching Out: How Many PCB Companies Are There in North America Now?
03/19/2026 | Tom Kastner -- Column: Punching Out!When I am asked how many PCB shops are still in the U.S., my answer is usually, “About 130. How many do you want to buy?” However, I do not really know the number. My job is either to sell PCB shops or help people buy them, not to count them. I probably should keep better track of them, but many are small (70% have revenue below $10 million), or they say they are making boards even if they rent out their facility as an auto repair shop.
From Classroom to Boardroom: One Year Yields a World of Perspective
03/15/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007Few college seniors can say their first plane ride took them straight into a global electronics boardroom. However, Emily Daley, a Michigan Technological University electrical engineering student, spent her senior year as the Student Board Member to the Global Electronics Association Board of Directors. She brought a fresh, student-centered perspective to the industry as she attended APEX EXPO, as well as board meetings in Taiwan and Lake Tahoe.
