It’s Only Common Sense: The Other Attributes of a Truly Creative, Innovative, and Successful Salesperson
In the sales world, success is not solely determined by hitting quotas or closing deals. A truly exceptional salesperson possesses a unique blend of creativity and innovation that sets them apart. A great salesperson does not follow the conventional path; they forge new trails, break boundaries, and continuously adapt to an ever-evolving landscape.
The person I am not talking about is not encumbered by what is going on with China, the economy, or anything else. They get out there and get things done. They do whatever it takes to win the order and make their forecasts.
The interesting thing about this kind of person is they go beyond the norm. They have developed qualities and attributes that are more character-based than anything else. Combining that with experience and a true passion for the craft of sales is what makes them successful in the end.
Here are some of the attributes of a great salesperson:
- Empathy: At the core of every successful salesperson's skillset is empathy. Understanding the needs, desires, and pain points of customers is fundamental. Creative salespeople go beyond simply listening; they immerse themselves in the customer's world, demonstrating genuine concern and care. Empathy enables them to build trust, establish rapport, and uncover hidden opportunities that others might overlook.
- Adaptability: Innovation in sales often stems from the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. A successful salesperson thrives in an ever-changing environment and is willing to pivot when necessary. They don't cling to outdated methods or strategies but are open to embracing new technologies and approaches that enhance their effectiveness.
- Problem solving: Creativity is synonymous with problem-solving. Exceptional salespeople view each sales opportunity as a unique puzzle to be solved. They relish challenges and find innovative solutions that align with the customer's needs. These individuals don't just offer products or services; they provide tailored solutions to meet the specific challenges faced by their clients.
- Curiosity: Curiosity is the driving force behind innovation. Creative salespeople are insatiably curious, always eager to learn, and to explore new horizons. They ask questions that others may not think to ask, seeking a deeper understanding of their industry, customers, and competitors. This curiosity fuels their ability to identify emerging trends and capitalize on them.
- Resilience: The sales profession is rife with rejection and setbacks, but a truly successful salesperson possesses the resilience to bounce back and persevere. They view every "no" as an opportunity to learn and improve, and they maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. This resilience fuels their innovative spirit, allowing them to continuously refine their approach.
- Creativity in communication: Effective communication is at the heart of sales, and creative salespeople excel in this area. They use words, tone, and body language to craft compelling narratives that resonate with their audience. They understand that storytelling can be a powerful tool to convey the value of their products or services and connect with customers on a deeper level.
- Networking skills: A creative and successful salesperson recognizes the importance of building a robust professional network. They actively seek opportunities to connect with industry leaders, mentors, and potential clients. Networking not only expands their knowledge base but also opens doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
- Continuous learning: Innovation requires a commitment to lifelong learning. Successful salespeople stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving customer preferences. They attend workshops, conferences, and webinars to stay ahead of the curve and adapt their strategies accordingly. They read books, lots of books. They know and appreciate the fact that learning keeps them young and sharp.
- Collaboration: We can’t do it alone. Creative salespeople recognize the power of collaboration. They work seamlessly with cross-functional teams, leveraging the expertise of colleagues in marketing, product development, and customer support to provide comprehensive solutions to their clients.
- Risk-taking: Innovation often involves taking calculated risks. Creative salespeople are not afraid to step out of their comfort zones and explore uncharted territory. They understand that playing it safe can lead to stagnation, while taking calculated risks can lead to breakthroughs and new opportunities.
- Strategic thinking: While creativity and innovation are essential, they must be guided by a strategic mindset. Successful salespeople don't just chase every opportunity that comes their way; they carefully assess each situation, prioritize their efforts, and allocate resources strategically to maximize their impact.
Finally, always under promise and over-deliver.
This is a special kind of person we are talking about. In fact, these attributes and qualities actually apply to all successful people not just salespeople. If you have these qualities, then congratulations, I am certain you are very successful. If you don’t think you do, then get to work on them. Use this list as a roadmap to your own future successful sales career.
It’s only common sense.
