Why should electronics manufacturers care about the new IPC Supplier Declaration Standards? Because compliance with global government regulations means manufacturers are expected to collect, verify, and exchange unprecedented amounts of supply chain data, often across hundreds of suppliers and thousands of components. Even more, it must be managed and exchanged efficiently, accurately, and at scale.
Yet many engineers, supply chain professionals, compliance managers, and purchasing teams still rely on spreadsheets, PDFs, and manual processes that were never designed to operate at today's scale. Each new customer request often means reformatting the same information into yet another portal or questionnaire, consuming valuable engineering and compliance resources while increasing the likelihood of errors. “We use a spreadsheet for that” is simply no longer adequate for the task at hand.
Chris Jorgensen, senior director, next generation standards, Global Electronics Association, outlined to the Indian electronics manufacturing community in a recent webinar why the industry’s approach to supplier declarations is undergoing a fundamental shift. Rather than viewing compliance as a collection of static documents, manufacturers are moving toward standardized, machine-readable data that can flow directly between suppliers, customers, and enterprise systems.
"The electronics supply chain faces unprecedented compliance demands," Jorgensen said. "PDF declarations and email exchanges simply cannot scale with that. The industry really needs standardized machine-readable data that can flow seamlessly through enterprise systems and into the supply chain."
That need has driven the latest evolution of the IPC Supplier Declaration Standards (IPC-175X series), a family of standards designed to standardize how compliance information is collected, exchanged, and integrated. More than simply updating reporting formats, the standards represent a broader move toward digital supply chains in which compliance data becomes interoperable, reusable, and far less dependent on manual intervention.
"The business outcome is pretty straightforward," Jorgensen said. "Suppliers complete one standardized declaration, and customers receive data in a consistent machine-readable format. Integration costs go down, and your compliance data exchange becomes something your systems can handle, not just your people."
Breaking Down the IPC-175X Family
IPC-1751 establishes the common reporting structure shared by the entire standards family. It is a digital framework that enables multiple declaration types to be exchanged in a single, standardized package. Business information, product identification, and customer request details are defined once and then reused across the remaining standards, reducing duplicate effort while ensuring consistency.
IPC-1752: Materials Declaration Requirements
For many manufacturers, however, materials compliance remains the most immediate concern. IPC-1752 addresses materials declaration requirements associated with regulations such as RoHS, REACH, and SCIP. The standard supports multiple reporting classes, ranging from simple yes-or-no compliance declarations to full material disclosure at the homogeneous material level, allowing suppliers to provide only the level of information needed, rather than recreating reports for every customer request.
IPC-1753: Laboratory Test Results
Compliance teams often receive analytical reports as PDFs that must be reviewed manually before the data can be entered into internal systems. IPC-1753 bridges that gap by adding a structured digital data layer alongside the traditional laboratory report. Rather than replacing traditional laboratory reports, IPC-1753 adds a structured, machine-readable data layer that enterprise systems can ingest automatically. The result is faster verification, improved traceability, and significantly less manual data entry.
IPC-1755: Responsible Sourcing
As OEMs face scrutiny over conflict minerals and responsible sourcing practices, suppliers are routinely asked to complete multiple customer questionnaires covering tin, tantalum, tungsten, gold, cobalt, mica, and other critical materials. IPC-1755 streamlines that process by allowing companies to prepare a single structured declaration that supports company-level, product-level, or customer-defined reporting scopes. Instead of responding to multiple proprietary templates, suppliers can reuse the same verified data across their customer base while providing the transparency that regulators and OEMs expect.
IPC-1757: Chemicals
While product declarations identify substances contained in finished assemblies, they typically do not address the chemicals used in manufacturing. IPC-1757 fills one of the industry's remaining reporting gaps by standardizing declarations for process chemicals used during manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment. As sustainability reporting expands, this capability will become increasingly important.
Underpinning these standards, Jorgensen said, is the industry's transition to JSON, a lightweight, machine-readable data format already native to most modern enterprise systems. Unlike older XML-based approaches or PDF documents, JSON means supplier declarations can integrate directly with ERP, PLM, cloud compliance platforms, and supplier portals. For manufacturers, that means lower integration costs, greater automation, and compliance data that can move seamlessly across the digital supply chain rather than remaining trapped in static documents.
Taken together, the IPC-175X standards establish a scalable digital framework for exchanging compliance data across the global electronics supply chain. As regulatory requirements expand, companies that adopt standardized, machine-readable reporting will be better positioned to reduce administrative burden, improve supply chain visibility, and support the next generation of trusted digital manufacturing.
