Current IssueVoices of the Industry
We take the pulse of the PCB industry by sharing insights from leading fabricators and suppliers in this month's issue. We've gathered their thoughts on the new U.S. administration, spending, the war in Ukraine, and their most pressing needs. It’s an eye-opening and enlightening look behind the curtain.
The Essential Guide to Surface Finishes
We go back to basics this month with a recount of a little history, and look forward to addressing the many challenges that high density, high frequency, adhesion, SI, and corrosion concerns for harsh environments bring to the fore. We compare and contrast surface finishes by type and application, take a hard look at the many iterations of gold plating, and address palladium as a surface finish.
It's Show Time!
In this month’s issue of PCB007 Magazine we reimagine the possibilities featuring stories all about IPC APEX EXPO 2025—covering what to look forward to, and what you don’t want to miss.

PNC Inc. Purchases GA 75 VSD FF from Atlas Copco
July 15, 2016 | PNC Inc.Estimated reading time: 1 minute

PNC Inc. recently made yet another investment in its pursuit to be as energy efficient as possible: the GA 75 VSD FF, 100 HP compressor. The efficiency of this machine is remarkable, not only because it can manage its own workflow, but because it will pay for itself in about five years through savings in electricity ($25,000 per year)—savings that will be passed on to PNC’s customers. This purchase stands as yet another testament to PNC’s commitment to the make-in-USA philosophy to bolster quality while still doing their best to keep costs and incentivize customers to buy products made here and not overseas.
The Variable Speed Drive (VSD) system this particular compressor utilizes achieves better energy-efficiency by controlling the voltage and current to alter the speed and torque of the DC motor. In the event that the facility requires more flow, it will be automatically assisted by two 30 HP compressors. As a result, a VSD can give the same power output previously generated while reducing power usage. This differs from a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) in a few subtle, but important ways. The most important of these is that VFD can only be used on AC motors, making it less versatile than a VSD system.
Another efficiency-related aspect of this compressor is that it essentially replaces five machines and consolidates all of their tasks into one unit, thereby saving space, maintenance time, and cost. Said PNC Inc. President Sam Sangani, “We’re very proud to be on the cutting edge of our industry, not only with the products we manufacture but also with the technology we employ in the process.”
About PNC Inc.
PNC Inc. has made numerous purchases geared toward energy and resource conservation, including the selective wave solder and aqueous cleaner in their state-of-the-art assembly department—both of which are specifically engineered to use only the resources necessary and keep waste to a minimum. PNC Inc. has also made small additions throughout their facilities, such as adding LCD displays, to further monitor and minimize energy consumption.

Knocking Down the Bone Pile: Gold Mitigation for Class 2 Electronics
05/07/2025 | Nash Bell -- Column: Knocking Down the Bone PileIn electronic assemblies, the integrity of connections between components is paramount for ensuring reliability and performance. Gold embrittlement and dissolution are two critical phenomena that can compromise this integrity. Gold embrittlement occurs when gold diffuses into solder joints or alloys, resulting in mechanical brittleness and an increased susceptibility to cracking. Conversely, gold dissolution involves the melting away of gold into solder or metal matrices, potentially altering the electrical and mechanical properties of the joint.
