Steve Williams is the Printed Circuit Board Commodity Manager for Plexus Corporation located in Neenah, Wisconsin, where he is responsible for strategic materials management and tactical support of the printed circuit board supply base. Prior to joining Plexus, Williams spent 22 years in senior management positions in the PCB fabrication industry. He holds a BA in Organizational Management from Concordia University and an MBA from Cardinal Stritch University.
"My motivation for writing the book was a statistic I came across that was just staggering. If you look at manufacturing services in the U.S., 80% of our country's gross domestic product comes from the services sector. For people who grew up in the manufacturing sector like I did, that was shocking. I wanted to write this book for any decision maker in an organization that wants to get a primer on Lean, Lean Sigma and Six Sigma and how it can apply to their organizations."
So far, the book has garnered high praise from reviewers. Industry forecaster Walt Custer, of Custer Consulting, said, "Survival is not Mandatory is a concise, practical guide to Lean Manufacturing--what it is, why it is critical and how to implement it in your organization. Steve Williams' book is especially valuable because it was written 'from the trenches' by someone who has 'been there and done that.' This book is fact-filled and well-organized. The author's clear, no-nonsense writing style, excellent examples and illustrations and frequent touches of humor combine to make this book an 'easy read' in one sitting while also serving as a valuable reference volume for years to come."
Noted industry insider Harvey Miller added, "Williams' book is a manual for accomplishing Lean. Survival is Not Mandatory gives a high-level view of what lean can do for PCB and EMS companies."
