World production of PWBs and flex circuits rose in 1999
World production of printed wiring boards (PWB) and flexible circuits reached US$36.2 billion in 1999, according to statistics in the Report on the World Market for Printed Wiring Boards and Substrate Materials recently published by the IPC Technology Market Research Council (TMRC). The TMRC is an industry forum for the active exchange of information and data regarding the PWB industry.
According to the report, global rigid PWB production for 1999 was $32.8 billion, and flexible circuit production was $3.4 billion.
Japan ranked number one in the global market, producing 29% of rigid PWBs in the world market, followed by the U. S. (26%), Taiwan (10%), China/Hong Kong (7%) and Germany (3%).
Japan also dominated the flexible circuit world market, accounting for 42% of production. The other top five producers: the U. S. (28%), Taiwan (6%), Thailand (5%), Germany (3%) and South Korea (2%).
Multilayer PWBs accounted for 42% of all types of laminate consumed based on square meters, while paper-based laminate accounted for 36%. Single-and double-sided glass and composite-based laminate accounted for the remaining 22%. World consumption of laminate for rigid PWBs is estimated at 2.5 billion square feet. The TMRC World Market Report also summarized worldwide microvia substrate shipments. In total square feet, Japan shipped 6.8 million, Europe and other parts of Asia combined for 2.5 million square feet, and North American accounted for 700,000 square feet. Japan owns 68% of the world market share in microvia substrates. Europe's shipments increased dramatically in 1999, up 160% over 1998.
