Nitrogen Generator Intros
September 7, 2007 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
Dominick Hunter introduced the Maxigas nitrogen generator as a method for companies to reduce the cost of nitrogen gas by generating their own supply from compressed air.
Introducing nitrogen gas as an atmosphere during the reflow process has been one method for keeping the level of oxidation low during board assembly. Maxigas uses the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) method of non-cryogenic nitrogen gas generation that is based on a normal compressed air system. Air (approximately 20% nitrogen gas) is filtered and dried trough a desiccant air dryer, then passed through a carbon molecular sieve bed to absorb oxygen molecules. Larger nitrogen molecules pass through the system, thus generating nitrogen gas.
