Asia Maintains Attraction for EMS
May 17, 2007 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Asia, in particular China, will continue to dominate the EMS and ODM markets over the next several years, according to research firm In-Stat. China's low labor costs and climbing domestic demand for electronic products will give the region about 76% of Asia's EMS/ODM market by 2011.
Consumer electronics are forecast to experience the highest growth in the 20062011 time frame. Contract EMS services in Asia should reach $281.8 billion by 2011, which will equal 55.1% of the global EMS market. In-Stat predicts that India, Thailand, and Vietnam will become choice low-cost manufacturing regions over the next five years, though China will remain the largest player.
In-Stat references two trends to support the continued use of Asian manufacturing for electronics production. OEMs will leverage cost structures of outsourcing EMS providers, located in China and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific; and EMS providers will establish local China operations to serve the growing domestic market, under pressure from OEMs looking to capitalize on the opportunity.
