Lead-free Solder Tips Aid Heat Transfer
July 12, 2006 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. SmartHeat PowerTips for the Metcal MX-500 system are designed specifically for lead-free applications, and will allow an operator to solder difficult joints without heat damage. The tips improve thermal performance, maintaining constant source temperatures during lead-free processes.
OK International found that different solder-tip geometries allow different amounts of energy to flow to the solder joint. Calculated mathematically by length, width, and shape, each solder tip's conductivity factor indicates how efficiently it conducts energy. Tips with higher numbers are more efficient. The company claims that all seven tips transfer more energy to the joint than traditional tips. The series of tips is based on the 10 best-known tip geometries for use with existing Metcal MX-500 systems.
Technology that eliminates heat damage and allows the solder tip to work at lower temperatures prolongs tip life. A cradle that interrupts energy flow to the tip also reduces tip temperature to a minimum level when not in use. This feature can help prevent oxidization, claims OK International. Accessories offered for lead-free manufacturing include a green cradle that can be inserted into the stand and green lead-free identification rings to slip onto soldering tips and cartridges.
