SMTA International Offers Free Events

Minneapolis — The SMTA Annual Conference, SMTA International, taking place Sunday, September 26 through Thursday, September 30, at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill., is co-located with the Assembly Technology Expo (ATExpo) and features free events for all attendees on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Opening Session will run from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and focus on RoHS compliance, as well as solder trends and lead-free soldering issues. A panel discussion from 10:30 a.m. to noon, made up of members of the JISSO North American Committee and moderated by SMT and Advanced Packaging Editor-in-Chief Gail Flower will look at the interfaces between different industries and the supply chain between them internationally. From 1:30 to 3 p.m., a presentation on Rapid Setup and Changeover will start with a review of basic concepts, followed by some real-life case studies. From 3:30 to 5 p.m., a session entitled "Lead-free: Where Are We Right Now?" will consist of three paper presentations and explore the transition from standard leaded solders in a volume-manufacturing environment.
On Tuesday, a networking reception will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. the SMTA's 20th Anniversary Gala, The Funtouchables, is free to all SMTA members (tickets required). The Gala will be set to the theme of Chicago in the "roaring '20s" and includes an Italian buffet, beverages, music, entertainment, and time to reminisce and network.
On Wednesday from 8:30 to 10 a.m., "NEMI Technology Roadmaps — Guides for Manufacturing Competitiveness in a Changing World's Electronics Environment" will provide a glimpse of the roadmap process and some representative projects that address the challenges of the global electronics industry. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, a presentation entitled "Can the U.S. be Competitive in the Global Electronic Product Assembly Marketplace? will present the current state of domestic manufacturing, the nature of the competition, and the structural changes that would permit a return of American leadership in electronic assembly. A paper session from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on "Improvements in Software to Enhance Shop Floor Control" will consist of three papers presentations covering information system design processes and defect tracking and yield enhancements through improved data collection systems.
