SMTA Establishes Corporate Advisory Council

Minneapolis -- The SMTA has established a Corporate Advisory Council made up of leaders representing each sector of the electronics manufacturing industry, including OEMs, contract manufacturers, suppliers, designers and academia.
The SMTA Corporate Advisory Council is dedicated to advising the SMTA Board of Directors on enhancing members' benefits. The Council is intended to be a focused forum for members' participation in SMTA activities and will act as a liaison with the global community to promote excellence in manufacturing.
The inaugural Council representatives are:
- Hans-Juergen Albrecht, Ph.D., senior principal research scientist, Siemens Berlin
- Alec Babiarz, senior vice president, Asymtek
- Jim Blankenhorn, president, SMT Plus
- Craig Brown, general manager and vice president, DEK
- Kim Hyland, director of engineering, Solectron
- Jeff Kennedy, director of advanced manufacturing engineering, Manufacturers' Services Ltd.
- Irene Lee, executive director, Seagate Singapore
- Roger Savage, president, Kester Northrop
- Hari Srihari, Ph.D., Binghamton University professor
- Chris Tanner, senior principal research engineer, Nortel U.K.
Specifically, the Council will analyze the following areas of SMTA membership: Enhancing networking opportunities, maximizing members' marketing dollars, increasing international members, increasing support at the local chapter level, promoting membership and renewal, surveying lapsed members, expanding relationships with universities overseas, identifying similar organizations internationally, and addressing new membership types such as global membership.
The Council will also work to identify current issues; for example, the economic impact of employment changes, acquisitions and consolidation of trade shows; the shift in high-volume manufacturing from North America to Asia; delivering technical content to multi-national members; and assembly tools and industry standardization.
