Medtronic Named Leading Company for Sustainability

Medtronic plc was recognized as one of the world's leading companies for sustainability with its ranking on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) for the eighth consecutive year. DJSI North America analyzes companies on a variety of sustainability criteria, including economic performance, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. This adds to the recognition Medtronic received earlier this year through its continued inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index Series.
Medtronic's commitment to sustainability, centered on creating value and working responsibly in all facets where our business intersects with society, is highly aligned with the company's strategies of therapy innovation, globalization, and economic value. The company's sustainability initiatives implement these strategies by targeting global access to healthcare, product quality and patient safety, ethical business practices, employee engagement and development, and environmental performance.
“We are proud of our efforts to address chronic disease, to follow environmentally sound business practices, and to bring sustainable value to all of our stakeholders,” said Gary Ellis, chief financial officer, Medtronic. “We are pleased to be recognized for these efforts by our inclusion on the DJSI North American Index.”
As part of the company’s sustainability commitment to expand access to care worldwide, Medtronic leverages global partnerships that allow us to scale our impact and connect more patients with the care they need. One example is our developing partnership with Apollo Hospitals in India to address end-stage renal disease for patients who need renal replacement therapy. The goal is to bring an affordable and portable hemodialysis system to market in the region, where about 10 percent of adults are affected by chronic kidney disease. The development of this new therapy will reduce barriers to treatment and help improve access to dialysis treatment. Medtronic is supporting the project with expanded R&D in India and a hemodialysis manufacturing plant in China that opened during FY2015.
Medtronic also continues to be recognized by the FTSE4Good Index announced earlier this year. Companies in the FTSE4Good Index Series have met stringent environmental, social and governance criteria, and are positioned to capitalize on the benefits of responsible business practices.
