Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Pioneer Circuits Displays Flex Circuits at 2018 Space Tech Expo
May 16, 2018 | Pioneer CircuitsEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Looking to support emerging space companies with their proven flex circuit technology, Pioneer Circuits will exhibit at the 2018 Space Tech Expo in booth 2005.
“I hold to the business adage, 'If it ain’t broke, break it!' If we’re not changing or continuously developing, we’re not growing,” said CEO Robert Lee in an interview for the Space Tech Expo. “We’re going to have to compete and cooperate simultaneously in order to sustain the pace of development [for space]. This 'coopetition.' or healthy sense of both competing and cooperating, will be necessary if we’re going to see ourselves landing on the moon again, reaching further into deep space, and potentially colonizing mars.”
“The Space Tech Expo is America’s engineering meeting place for space technology to showcase the latest from technical designers, sub-system suppliers, manufacturers and components through to systems integrators for civil, military and commercial space.”

Defense Speak Interpreted: Understanding What the Department of Defense Is, and Isn’t
05/12/2026 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak InterpretedI frequently hear the expression, “Why can’t the Department of Defense … .” Most recently, I heard it in reference to the Artemis splash-down after the launch around the moon. I realized there is some misunderstanding about which military or space activities are controlled by the Department of Defense (DoD) and which are not. Defense is a huge organization with many activities, but there are several differences with non-Defense organizations that are worth pointing out.
