Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.
Looking Forward to APEX EXPO 2026
I-Connect007 Magazine previews APEX EXPO 2026, covering everything from the show floor to the technical conference. For PCB designers, we move past the dreaded auto-router and spotlight AI design tools that actually matter.

AltiumLive 2018 a Mecca for PCB Designers
October 8, 2018 | Barry Matties, I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
After dinner, attendees drew numbers and formed teams for the after-dinner robot challenge and battles.
The bot battle was amazing, check out the video at the bottom of this page. The newly formed teams were provided a kit with instructions that for assembling the robots. Once assembled, the bot battles began. I must say, adding this challenge to the event really strengthens the connections attendees make here. The teams work together and compete against each other all in the spirit of good fun.
As day three began, the energy was high and the event carried on. The day was full of classes designed to help inspire the great minds of our industry. At the end of the day, Altium’s Judy Warner interviewed Bil Hurd, designer of the Commodore 128. Bil shared dozens of “war stories” from the early days of personal computers.
At the end of his talk, he gave away a new, autographed Commodore 64 game to the first person to explain the significance of a penguin in a Monty Python skit (it explodes), and our own Editor Andy Shaughnessy took home that prize. Trivia knowledge comes in handy sometimes. Other raffle winners took home all kinds of cool electronic prizes.
All in all, this event is one that will continue to grow and do well. As in 2017, Altium is planning another AltiumLive Europe in January of 2019. This event will take place in Munich, Germany. As the official Media sponsor of the AltiumLive events, we congratulate the entire Altium team on another successful event.

A Mic, a Tiny Cam, and the Show Floor: The Story Behind 'Take the Mic!'
04/23/2026 | I-Connect007 Editorial TeamI-Connect007’s Take the Mic! program at APEX EXPO 2026 in Anaheim is proving to be a must-watch feature for this year’s event coverage, as we invited company representatives to participate in a sponsored conversation about their businesses and products in a whole new way: in front of a camera at their booths. While our managing editors and guest editors were conducting slightly longer Real Time With… APEX EXPO interviews in our booth, three staff members and guests acted as roaming reporters, conducting short, prearranged interviews with several companies exhibiting on the show floor.
PHOTO GALLERY: A Walk on the Lighter Side
04/23/2026 | I-Connect007APEX EXPO isn’t all business! To wrap up our last photo gallery, we’re sharing some of our favorites from the show—a walk on the lighter side. We’re highlighting those in-between moments: quick selfies, familiar faces reconnecting, robot dogs, booth-side laughs, and the kind of candid snapshots you only get when people are genuinely enjoying themselves. At the end of the day, it’s not just about what we do, it’s about the people we do it with.

Meet Emerging Engineer Logan Bistodeau, IBM
04/09/2026 | Michelle Te, I-Connect007When he was growing up, Logan Bistodeau was always interested in how heavy machinery worked, so it was natural that he earned a mechanical engineering degree at Iowa State University. He originally grew up near the Twin Cities in Minnesota, now works for IBM, and is in his first year of the Emerging Engineer Program through the Global Electronics Association. I got to know Logan a little better at APEX EXPO 2026.
Target Condition: An Exploration of Flooding PCB Layers
04/02/2026 | Kelly Dack -- Column: Target ConditionThe concept of flooding PCB layers with copper has been around for so long, you’d think we’d have it mastered. We haven’t. (Oh, and by “we,” I mean design engineers and the software tools we depend on.) Years ago, PCB artwork was created by hand using light tables, with tape applied to Mylar. Signals were slow, traces were relatively wide, and high-current paths were simply “beefed up” with wider copper. Signal integrity wasn’t yet a driving concern. Today, solid return paths are fundamental to robust design. We understand the importance of continuous reference planes for signal integrity and EMI control.
