PCB maker Unimicron Technology has seen its production efficiency improve by 70% after adopting AI solutions for product inspection through cooperating with IBM, Digitimes quotes company president Lan Ting as saying.
Unimicron now employs AOI equipment on production lines, but the company still has to allocate 20% of its manpower to double-check its finished products, as the equipment can hardly function as well as expected due to color variations and location differences of finished products, Lan said, adding that assembly line workers are sometimes too tired to do the inspection job well, undermining the overall yield rates.
To counter, Unimicron has cooperated with IBM to develop an AI-assisted judgment mechanism that can work with automatic vision of product appearance. The mechanism has sharply boosted the firm's production efficiency, reduce workloads on inspection personnel and achieve consistent shipment quality.
