Today is a federal holiday in the United States as the country celebrates Independence Day. Usually celebrated on July 4 in honor of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, if the 4th falls on a Sunday, the official holiday is celebrated on Monday, July 5, a tradition that begin in 1779.
The actual break with Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence. Congress then spent two days debating and revising the Declaration of Independence, which was written almost entirely by Thomas Jefferson, and the document was signed on July 4, 1776. The holiday has been celebrated since 1777.
