The actual break with Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence. Congress then spent two days debating and revising the Declaration of Independence, which was written almost entirely by Thomas Jefferson, and the document was signed on July 4, 1776. The holiday has been celebrated since 1777.
