Following a successful range of environmental activities for Earth Day across April and May, Ultra has partnered with SEA LIFE Weymouth in participating in a beach clean across the Weymouth coastline.
The Beach Clean for World Oceans Day was the first that Ultra has taken part in. Committed to acting as a positive force and making an active contribution to the communities in which we operate, Ultra collaborated with the SEA LIFE Weymouth team. The Adventure Park has hosted many Beach Cleans throughout the year, lending their expert knowledge and advice to participants, promoting a safer environment for sea creatures to exist in.
With two main sites located near the Dorset coast, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Ultra is proud to be supporting initiatives within our local environment and learn more about local habitats. To do more than litter pick, valuing the community-led approach, Ultra partnered with the team at SEA LIFE Weymouth to provide expert knowledge and experience about current pollution trends, its effects on local habitat and climate change.
Over the course of the 3-hour event the team, consisting of 21 people, collected 19.5kilos of litter, rescued a duckling and covered a distance of 3.6miles.
Both ULTRA and SEA LIFE Weymouth will follow up with a visit to a local primary school as part of an environmental and STEM outreach activity sharing items that were collected during the Beach Clean-up and invite the students to take part in a Plastic Pollution poster campaign.
Sue Racster, Corporate Social Responsibility Director at ULTRA said, “As an initiative, the Beach Clean-up is a perfect platform to show how we, as a business, can create an enriched opportunity to get everyone involved. Local activities that make a difference where we live, and work are vitally important.
"An objective of this activity is to enable Ultra participants to learn more about plastic pollution and become champions for change. Measuring the output of what we collect will also offer us the opportunity to contribute our findings to global environmental surveys, for example, the Shark Trust.
We’re delighted to be working in partnership with the SEA LIFE team on this community project and anticipate this being the first of many collaborative Beach Clean-up events.”
Tamsin Mutton-McKnight, General Manager at Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park said, "Beach Cleans provides a simple and effective way in which everyone can help to turn the tide on litter within local waters. We are always willing to share our expertise and support other local businesses with knowledge and best practice to host successful clean-ups all year round."
"Working with ULTRA and a local Primary School provides us an opportunity to increase public interest and awareness of how to protect the planet's seas and how to sustainably manage its resources"
