We take the pulse of the PCB industry by sharing insights from leading fabricators and suppliers in this month's issue. We've gathered their thoughts on the new U.S. administration, spending, the war in Ukraine, and their most pressing needs. It’s an eye-opening and enlightening look behind the curtain.
The Essential Guide to Surface Finishes
We go back to basics this month with a recount of a little history, and look forward to addressing the many challenges that high density, high frequency, adhesion, SI, and corrosion concerns for harsh environments bring to the fore. We compare and contrast surface finishes by type and application, take a hard look at the many iterations of gold plating, and address palladium as a surface finish.

Productronica 2023: Day 1 Review
November 14, 2023 | Barry Matties, I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 1 minute

The November rain didn’t stop the long line of attendees waiting at the door for productronica 2023 to open Tuesday, November 14 in Munich, Germany. Exhibitors and attendees came from all over the world to be part of this biannual event, and the crowds were strong. For reference, according to show organizer Messe Munchen, the most recent productronica, held in 2021, drew over 19,000 visitors from 68 countries. It's a big show.
The show occupies eight halls and nearly 90,000 square meters, with more than 1,300 exhibitors ready to show their products and services.
I walked the halls and rows as much as I could on this first day, speaking with exhibitors who are excited to be here. Most of the people I spoke with shared enthusiasm for our industry, but when I asked them about the economic outlook, many expressed uncertainties about what’s to come.
We also discussed many other topics, ranging from automation to integrating AI into their factories and workforce development.
I’m looking forward to the tech forums that are focused on these topics, as well as topics surrounding the continued miniaturization of PCBs and the new technologies that will be needed to produce them.
This four-day event concludes on Friday, November 17. I hope you enjoy a collection of photos below from our first day at this global show. Stay tuned for more content as we report from the show floor. We are also activley populating our show site Real Time with... productronia 2023 be sure to check back often.

IPC APEX EXPO 2025 Review: Expecting the Unexpected
03/31/2025 | Tom Kastner, GP VenturesOne of the best things about trade shows is not the scheduled meetings but the chance meetings that come up unexpectedly. Just because you happened to go down one aisle instead of the next, you bump into an old acquaintance that you have not seen for years, or you happen to talk to the guy in line next to you to get a $5 Pepsi, and it turns into a great, new connection.
