SMTA Bright Manufacturing Challenge Enters Its Second Year With 30 Teams

08/04/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007
SMTA’s second annual Bright Manufacturing Challenge kicked off July 1 and will end at SMTAI in October as college students from 30 teams (nearly double from the first year) compete to build a robot from the design to fabrication to assembly. Finalists will watch as the robots they built race for the first-place award. SMTA’s Tara Dunn talks about the program and this year’s challenge, what they’ve learned, and how excited the students are to be involved.

Elementary, Mr. Watson: Inside the Display Power Loop

08/06/2026 | John Watson -- Column: Elementary, Mr. Watson
In my previous column, I traced the evolution from fixed physical interfaces to dynamic, software-defined displays, and saw how a familiar model of input and output slowly gave way to something far more fluid. That foundation begs the question: If the display has become the center of interaction, what does that change about how we design the systems behind it?

It’s Only Common Sense: Stop Watching the Headlines and Start Watching the Opportunity

07/27/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
If you spend too much time watching the news, you could easily convince yourself that the electronics industry is headed for trouble. Every day seems to bring another story about tariffs, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, geopolitical tensions, inflation, slowing economies, or uncertainty in global markets. It is enough to make even experienced business leaders question what comes next.

Beyond Recycling: A Circularity Approach for a Truly Resilient Electronics Supply Chain

07/23/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007
Dr. Diana Radovan, director of sustainability policy and sustainability advocacy lead at the Global Electronics Association, has been at the center of some of the electronics industry's most consequential policy discussions, from the European Parliament in Brussels to sustainability summits in Germany and circularity conferences across Europe. With the European Union's landmark Circular Economy Act moving closer to reality and updates to PFAS regulations, she has been ensuring that the voice of the electronics industry is heard. In this interview, she discusses what's coming, why it matters, why true circularity extends far beyond recycling, and what policymakers still need to do to enable it.

Elementary, Mr. Watson: The Display Revolution, Now With Fewer Tiny Keys

07/23/2026 | John Watson -- Column: Elementary, Mr. Watson
From the earliest days of electronics, engineers have worked within some shared assumptions about how systems should be built and how people should interact with them. These assumptions often feel so natural that they are rarely questioned; they define what "normal" is. Thomas Kuhn, the American philosopher of science best known for introducing the idea of "technical paradigm shifts," observed, "What someone sees depends upon what he looks at and also upon what his previous visual-conceptual experience has taught him to see." In other words, we do not readily notice the framework we are in while using it, nor how it relates to the broader picture of innovation.
