Current IssueInner Layer Precision & Yields
In this issue, we examine the critical nature of building precisions into your inner layers and assessing their pass/fail status as early as possible. Whether it’s using automation to cut down on handling issues, identifying defects earlier, or replacing an old line...

The real cost to manufacture a PCB encompasses everything that goes into making the product: the materials and other value-added supplies, machine and personnel costs, and most importantly, your quality. A hard look at real costs seems wholly appropriate.
Alternate Metallization Processes
Traditional electroless copper and electroless copper immersion gold have been primary PCB plating methods for decades. But alternative plating metals and processes have been introduced over the past few years as miniaturization and advanced packaging continue to develop.

Celebrating the Impact of IPC Community
February 9, 2024 | Michelle Te, I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
IPC Community recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and everyone is recognizing our efforts to celebrate the success between IPC and its members, and showcase the interesting and important work of this nonprofit trade association.
For his blog on LinkedIn, Chris Mitchell, vice president of global government relations for IPC, spent considerable time reading and enjoying the articles in this latest issue. He then wrote about his findings and specifically highlighted articles for others to read.
“I just finished the latest issue of IPC Community, which is chock full of great content, including timely updates on IPC standards, workforce programs, and events like IPC APEX EXPO 2024,” he wrote. “(I enjoyed) the spotlight on the IPC credentialing and the certification team that works with our community to bring strength to our workforce. IPC is truly an indispensable resource.”
While he appreciated these informative features about IPC events and initiatives, he most enjoyed the articles that feature the “amazing people in our community—electronics professionals who commit themselves every day to building electronics better through industry collaboration.”
The mission of IPC Community is to highlight IPC members and others in the greater electronics manufacturing industry who are doing their part to further the mission of IPC to “build electronics better,” often through standards development, as subject matter experts, and by bringing together diverse groups within the supply chain and in government.
“We also want to show the more ‘human’ side of those who work in this industry, and how they use their talents and hobbies to enhance their professional and personal lives,” says Michelle Te, IPC Community managing editor. “Telling these stories is what makes this work so rewarding.”
As he continued his blog post, Mitchell then called out three specific articles for further reading.
First, he talked about the article titled “A Farmer at Heart,” which features Joe Russeau, a test engineer who raises cattle on the side. “How can you not love this profile of IPC standards Joe Russeau?” Mitchell wrote. “He brings the same passion, precision and sense of responsibility to his cattle farm that he brings to his work at Precision Analytical Laboratory.”
Next, he mentioned an article about IPC’s Technical Activities Executive Committee, which oversees all of IPC’s standards committees. Potential standards must go through a TAEC review process first before moving on to specific committee.
“The headline undersells an article that pops through the voices of those on the committee,” Mitchell said. “The true gem, though, is the mini-profile of Karen McConnell, a giant in our industry and who I learned is also a ‘Harry Potter nut.’” I bet you’ll find a whole host of those, Chris.
Finally, Mitchell focused on an article that reviewed an event called IPC Day Romania. “I had to live vicariously through those who attended this amazing Flex-sponsored event in Romania, which drew more than 230 participants and great speakers from the industry’s leading companies. This piece is just one of many in IPC Community that exemplifies IPC’s global reach.”
Of course, he couldn’t finish the blog without mentioning some other key content: Shawn DuBravac’s take on nearshoring in Mexico, Jan Pedersen of NCAB who wrote about recycling of PCBs, Michael Carano’s update on the IPC Thought Leaders program, and interviews with the student chapter leaders at Auburn University.
IPC Community also always includes at least one member profile, and focuses on activities and members through the Wire Harness Manufacturers Association (WHMA), which has a partnership with IPC.

Are Our Stackup Rules No Longer Valid?
12/19/2024 | Cherie Litson, EPTAC MIT CID/CID+Are the stackup rules we used to follow no longer valid? It depends on what you’re designing. Electrical rules change depending on your circuit. Fabrication rules change depending on which fabricator you’re working with. Today, we just have more options, and sometimes, cost is a bigger rule than anything else. If you search online for information about layer stackups, trace widths, and hole sizes in PCBs, you’ll find a variety of resources.
