A University Model for Training the Next Generation of PCB Designers

08/19/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007
Veteran PCB designer and educator John Watson has building one of the nation's most comprehensive university-based PCB design certificate programs in the country. He’s working with Palomar College, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz, and UMass Lowell to teach the complete design-to-manufacturing process while connecting students with internships and career opportunities. I spoke with John about the industry's workforce challenges, building meaningful educational pathways, and why the next generation of PCB designers may come from places few would expect.

Happy’s Tech Talk #49: Stop! Do You Have a Digital Strategy for the Future?

08/11/2026 | Happy Holden -- Column: Happy’s Tech Talk
I am sure you have been wondering how you will survive this new age of AI, tariffs, China, and the ever-increasing cost of materials and PCB equipment. You cannot just sit back and watch it roll over you. If you wish for your company to survive, you need a “digitalization strategy,” and that includes a way to afford it.

The Marketing Minute: The Tyranny of the Dashboard

07/08/2026 | Brittany Martin -- Column: The Marketing Minute
For years, I treated my health like a dashboard. I tracked my steps, calories, protein intake, sleep score, and resting heart rate. If a number could be attached to it, I wanted to optimize it, and I got pretty good at it. But the dashboard wasn't telling the whole story, and that was a problem. I could hit every target and still feel exhausted. I could achieve every metric while ignoring stress, recovery, and whether I actually felt healthy. Eventually, I realized I'd become less interested in my health than in producing good numbers. I had become a slave to the dashboard.

Standard of Excellence: The Future of Fabrication—From Art to Automation

06/24/2026 | Anaya Vardya -- Column: Standard of Excellence
In the earliest days of PCB manufacturing, every build was part science, craftsmanship, and prayer. Veteran fabricators could smell a bad batch of laminate before it failed, sense a process drift before it showed up on a chart, and diagnose a plating problem by sight. That human intuition, the art of fabrication, was the foundation of our industry. The next generation of excellence is about magnifying the human touch through intelligent automation, data-driven control, and a digital mindset that ties every process, operator, and outcome together.

I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week

06/19/2026 | Michelle Te, I-Connect007
Why do so many students who begin college intending to pursue STEM careers ultimately change direction? According to research highlighted by Malcolm Gladwell, the answer often has less to do with ability than perseverance. That spirit of continuous learning is reflected in my must-reads for the week, from major industry investments and policy developments to conferences, publications, and tools designed to help engineers improve their craft. Be sure to read the June issues of I-Connect007 Magazine and the Advanced Electronics Packaging Digest, which both published this week. They serve as a reminder that innovation depends not only on technology, but also on the people willing to keep learning and growing throughout their careers.
