Current IssueInner Layer Precision & Yields
In this issue, we examine the critical nature of building precisions into your inner layers and assessing their pass/fail status as early as possible. Whether it’s using automation to cut down on handling issues, identifying defects earlier, or replacing an old line...
Engineering Economics
The real cost to manufacture a PCB encompasses everything that goes into making the product: the materials and other value-added supplies, machine and personnel costs, and most importantly, your quality. A hard look at real costs seems wholly appropriate.
Alternate Metallization Processes
Traditional electroless copper and electroless copper immersion gold have been primary PCB plating methods for decades. But alternative plating metals and processes have been introduced over the past few years as miniaturization and advanced packaging continue to develop.

Metcal Introduces New MicroFine Products for Soldering Under the Microscope
October 2, 2024 | MetcalEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Metcal, part of OK International and Dover and a leader in benchtop soldering for electronics and industrial manufacturing, announced the launch of its new MicroFine soldering handpieces and cartridge tips for use under microscopes.
MicroFine products will be offered with both soldering and tweezer handpiece configurations and compatible with the Metcal MX Series and Connection Validation™ (CV) Series soldering systems. The new handpieces offer the fixed temperature process control expected from Metcal SmartHeat® products, but in significantly smaller, lighter formfactors.
“The new MicroFine products give Metcal users the ability to leverage the power and reliability of their current systems under the microscope,” said Joshua Edberg, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Metcal. “These handpieces and cartridges are much smaller than anything we’ve introduced before, making it possible to rework components as small as size 01005 without the need to purchase a separate system.”
In connection with the release of the MicroFine line, Metcal is introducing a pair of upgraded workstands, now with hands-free tip insertion and removal and tweezer cartridge tip alignment. These design advancements will also be reflected in future versions of their full-sized workstands.
“Our goal was to make the MicroFine line ideal for use under the microscope with a small, lightweight, and ergonomic design” said Can La, Product Director of Metcal. “The handpieces are well-balanced and comfortable, and the redesigned workstands make the Microfine tools safer and easier to use.”
