Hitachi Energy Expands and Increases Workforce in Composite Component Factory in Piteå, Sweden
January 24, 2025 | Hitachi EnergyEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Hitachi Energy is expanding its transformers components factory in Piteå by investing in new machinery and increasing the number of employees by 50 percent.
This investment addresses the growing demand for power transmission equipment worldwide, driven by the energy transition.
The factory in Piteå produces composite insulators used in transformers, circuit breakers, and power electronics, components in systems that contribute to and enable the transfer of large amounts of energy between countries and over long distances. The expanded factory will be able to increase the amount of available equipment, significantly improve operations, and facilitate planning and material handling in the production flow. Three separate production lines will be created: small insulators, large insulators, and cylinders for tap changers.
Hitachi Energy in Sweden and across Europe is on a growth journey, with extensive investments and new recruitments driven by the accelerating energy transition. The investment in Piteå is one of the company's expansions in Sweden; in 2024, the company announced a major investment and capacity increase at the plant in Ludvika and Västerås, and it inaugurated an expanded factory in Smedjebacken.
In December 2024, Hitachi Energy acquired the existing property. The new expanded factory is scheduled for commissioning in the fall of 2026. Today, approximately 200 people work in the factory in Piteå, and with this investment, the workforce is expected to grow to approximately 300 employees by 2030.
Hitachi Energy currently has about 7,000 employees in Sweden. The company is located in several locations in the country, with the largest operations in Ludvika and Västerås.
