Boyd Opens State of the Art Battery Material Test Lab to Safely Accelerate Battery Design and New Product Introduction
April 9, 2025 | Boyd CorporationEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Boyd, a leader in battery thermal propagation prevention and thermal runaway containment technology, announced the grand opening of its cutting-edge battery material test laboratory in San Jose, California. Equipped with comprehensive modern test equipment, onsite material samples, and highly skilled personnel, Boyd’s Battery Material Safety Lab is dedicated to delivering fast, accurate, comprehensive, and reliable battery material testing for customers.
The Boyd Battery Material Safety Lab evaluates material performance based on electric vehicle (EV) customer battery safety requirements and specifications. Boyd’s testing technology was designed and implemented to meet the world’s leading battery company and EV OEM requirements. All essential battery material tests are consolidated into one laboratory for more efficient material validation including hot side/cold side, torch and grit, thermal conductivity, moisture resistance, compression force deflection, and dielectric results. Boyd’s EV battery material tests are structured to simulate highly varying and harsh real-world environmental conditions and safety challenges. Boyd’s structured approach to testing provides a repeatable test process for current thermal solutions.
In addition to testing, Boyd offers extensive simulation capability. Boyd experts leverage proprietary finite element analysis modeling software to predict the performance of different material combinations that meet customer specifications for battery thermal runaway prevention and containment as well as costs. Fast and accurate data empowers EV brands to make quicker, more confident battery material decisions. Combined with in-house prototyping and manufacturing capabilities, Boyd ramps seamlessly from test to production, accelerating time-to-market and reducing R&D and validation testing costs for its customers.
“We are excited to unveil our new state-of-the-art Battery Material Safety Lab,” remarks Michael Sutsko, Engineered Materials Division President at Boyd. “Battery material validation is critical to EV safety and has traditionally been difficult to complete. We are helping our customers accelerate battery design and time-to-market cycles as a one-stop-shop to design, validate, and manufacture integrated thermal runaway prevention technologies.”
