I-Connect007 Observes U.S. Independence Day Holiday

Today marks the 249th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. Known widely in the U.S. as Independence Day or “The Fourth of July,” this day also commemorates the declaration by the Congress that the American colonies are free and independent states. The actual adoption of the Declaration took place on July 2, 1776, but it is the day the declaration was ratified by voting members of the Continental Congress that has been chosen as the observed holiday.
The 13 American colonies and their representatives took an enormous risk in striking out for independence. Continental Congress member, Benjamin Rush, had this to say later in life, “Do you recollect the pensive and awful silence which pervaded the house when we were called up, one after another, to the table of the President of Congress to subscribe what was believed by many at that time to be our own death warrants?"
