GEN3 Launches AutoCHT: Next-Generation Condensation Humidity Tester for Damp Heat Testing

GEN3 introduces the AutoCHT Condensation Humidity Tester. The AutoCHT is a world first platen based system that generates a controlled condensation layer which can characterise conformal coatings on electronic assemblies.
The AutoCHT is the first product to produce controlled levels of condensation, repeatedly and reproducibly, on a PCB assembly. GEN3 has developed its own approach to a technique originally pioneered at the UK National Physical Laboratory. The concept utilises a platen mounted at 45˚that is inside a damp heat chamber (DHC). The AutoCHT chills the platen to produce controlled condensation, testing the robustness of circuit assemblies. This test will search out coating defects, such as the well know sharp edge coverage issue. The AutoCHT can be programmed to produce any required condensation profile.
The AutoCHT is designed for:
- Characterisation of conformal coating and dispensing systems seeking rapid feedback on product performance.
- Reliability engineers and R&D labs requiring characterisation of real-world condensation exposure.
- Identification of failure due to poor sharp edge coverage.
- OEMs in safety-critical industries (automotive, aerospace, defence, and avionics).
AutoCHT enables engineers to:
- Reveal coating failures and test susceptibility to the growth of short circuits.
- Discover and test for sharp edge defects.
- Complete tests in hours, rather than weeks for a typical SIR test.
- Run tests by lowering the platen temperature below the dew point, independently of the DHC, to produce controlled condensation.
- Adjust test board temperature with a step size of 0.1 ˚C, to at least 1˚C below the Dew Point.
The platen arrangement of the AutoCHT is readily fitted into most DHC, and only requires the DHC to run at a constant environmental condition, a nominal 40°C/90%RH. Cooling of the platen is achieved by the AutoCHT control unit. The AutoCHT works under control from the GEN3’s AutoSIR2+ App, which seamlessly integrates SIR measurements with platen control. This system allows repetitive cycling of the platen with independently settable temperature limits, while simultaneously enabling continuous real-time monitoring of resistance changes on complex test boards. This integrated approach provides invaluable insight into how different coatings, layouts, and spacings perform under precisely controlled condensation events.
