Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

ICAPE Group Unveils Exclusive Report on Sustainability in Electronics Manufacturing
September 15, 2025 | ICAPE GroupEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
ICAPE Group, a global leader in printed circuit boards (PCBs) and custom electronics manufacturing, today announces the launch of its 2025 Industry Outlook & Innovation Report: Sustainability in Electronics Manufacturing. This exclusive report is accompanied by fresh insights from a dedicated Statista survey of 100 electronics manufacturing professionals, commissioned by ICAPE Group.
The study highlights a growing consensus: 87% of professionals believe sustainability will be the industry’s top priority within five years, underscoring the scale of the transformation underway.
A Global Industry at a Crossroads
Electronics manufacturing is a cornerstone of modern society, but it carries a heavy environmental toll:
- 30% of the sector’s CO₂ emissions come from PCB production alone.
- Less than 20% of global e-waste is properly recycled, with volumes projected to hit 74 million metric tons by 2030.
- Regulations such as the EU Green Deal, RoHS, WEEE, and the upcoming ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) are reshaping the industry’s future.
Innovations Offering Real Solutions
Among the most promising advances is Jiva Materials’ Soluboard®, a biodegradable PCB substrate made from natural fibers. When immersed in hot water, Soluboard® dissolves, allowing the recovery and reuse of valuable components while reducing PCB-related carbon emissions by up to 60% compared to fiberglass boards. ICAPE Group is actively supporting the adoption of this technology.
Exclusive Data: Insights from Industry Professionals
ICAPE’s Statista survey of 106 professionals across the U.S., Germany, and China reveals:
- 86% say sustainability is important in electronics production.
- 58% already set measurable sustainability KPIs (mainly in larger firms), with procurement roles leading the shift.
- 53% remain unwilling to pay a premium for sustainable components, signaling cost as a key barrier.
- RoHS (75%) and ISO 14001 (72%) certifications are the most commonly required in supplier evaluations.
Turning E-Waste into an Opportunity
E-waste is often seen as an environmental crisis, but ICAPE Group emphasizes it is also a catalyst for innovation and competitive advantage. Circular design, modular components, and eco-materials are not only regulatory imperatives but also business opportunities that can secure supply chains and win consumer trust.
