productronica 2025: Showcasing the Future of Electronics Manufacturing for 50 Years
November 25, 2025 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
Last week’s productronica 2025 at Messe München in Munich marked a significant milestone for the European electronics manufacturing industry. The biennial show celebrated its 50th anniversary, highlighting five decades of technological transformation as the largest global trade fair for electronics manufacturing.
Co-located with Semicon Europa, productronica attracted an attendance of over 47,000 visitors, featuring more than 1,600 exhibitors from over 50 countries. The energy and positivity reflected a strong trend in the industry as technology evolves at what feels like warp speed.
A Half-century Legacy
Since its inception in 1975, productronica has tracked the rise of modern electronics, from the early days of PCB fabrication to today’s era of AI-driven smart factories, advanced packaging, and high-density interconnect substrates. The 2025 show embraced this legacy with special programming and historical displays, but the real emphasis was on looking forward by showcasing innovation at every turn.
There were 10 exhibition halls, and seven of them showcased the full electronics manufacturing ecosystem: PCB and EMS; SMT; Cables, Coils and Hybrids; Semiconductors; Future Production; Manufacturing Services; and Overall Production Support. This broad scope gives productronica unique value and sets it apart from other prominent trade shows. It also accounts for its huge size.
The 2025 themes reflected major global trends, such as advanced packaging, power electronics, trusted microelectronics, electrification, and AI-enabled production. Live demonstrations included connected smart lines, robotic handling systems, cleanroom production environments, and even a showcase on electrified aircraft systems, highlighting the increasingly diverse applications for advanced electronics.
Highlighting Innovation: Awards in PCB and EMS
A standout moment at every productronica is the Innovation Award. This year, in the PCB/EMS sector, SCHMID Group’s InfinityLine L+ was named the PCB & EMS Cluster Winner, earning top recognition for incorporating semiconductor-grade planarization into PCB, substrate, and panel-level packaging applications. This topic is gaining significant attention as PCB and semiconductor manufacturing become more central in the industry’s efforts to develop new packaging solutions. Schmid’s system is designed to process large-format panels up to 24.5" × 24.5" and supports sub-5-micron structures—a crucial milestone as the industry advances into finer lines, higher densities, and glass-substrate technologies.
Another notable award was Ersa’s Versafit One, which won the SMT Cluster Award. The system is a semi-automatic press-fit solution that addresses increasing demand for reliable, solder-free press-fit connections—essential in high-performance, high-reliability electronics such as those used in automotive, e-mobility, and renewable energy systems. Press-fit technologies are gaining importance, and Ersa’s innovations enhance integration across PCB fabrication, assembly, and mechanical interconnection.
Slightly tangential but still important to the PCB, EMS, and SMT sectors was Palitronica GmbH’s Inspection and Quality Cluster Award for its Hardware Cybersecurity & Integrity Platform, which emphasizes hardware integrity, counterfeit detection, and real-time manufacturing security. As supply-chain assurance becomes a strategic priority, these technologies are increasingly embedded in EMS and PCB operations, particularly for aerospace, defense, medical, and critical infrastructure electronics. Recognizing such innovation underscores a broader shift: the PCB/EMS world is no longer just about materials and processes, but also about ensuring the authenticity and trustworthiness of every component and board that enters production.
Global Electronics Association Goes All Out
The Global Electronics Association’s Technology Forum and International Hand Soldering Competition were both highlights of this year’s event, and things that attendees should mark on their calendars for electronica 2026 and productronica 2027. With a solid and full agenda, the Forum was something I wish I’d had more time to focus on while at the show. It kicked off with a comprehensive overview of the EMS landscape in Europe, presented by the Association’s European intelligence and advocacy teams and highlighted by data presented by Dieter Weiss. The forum then moved on to cover a full range of more tech-focused topics, such as design for reliability, presented by Flex’s Tiberiu Baranyi, presentations on “Silicon to Systems” and where advanced electronics packaging is headed by Peter Tranitz, and othe presentations on sustainability, supply chain resilience, standards, and training.
A standout feature was, absolutely, the return of the organization’s Hand Soldering World Championship, where regional winners from around the globe competed on Thursday and Friday, soldering a complex printed circuit board of over 130 components to IPC-610 Class 3 standard within 60 minutes while being scrutinized by judges and onlookers. (Stay tuned for more coverage on this event and the announcement of the winner.) Finally, the Association previewed a forthcoming Cable and Wire Harness Assembly Competition slated for 2026.
In short, the Global Electronics Association’s program blended technical insights, live skill challenges, and networking spaces—positioning the booth as a dynamic hub for engineers, EMS/PCB professionals, and supply chain stakeholders.
Productronica: Looking to the Next 50 Years
With a 10% increase in attendance over 2023, fabulous international participation, and its usual blend of education, live demonstrations, and forward-thinking technology, productronica 2025 reinforced its role as a premier global event for electronics manufacturing. The industry’s trajectory toward finer features, higher precision, larger formats, smarter automation, and secure supply chains was on full and glorious display, as one would expect.
For exhibitors, the show provided opportunities to showcase breakthroughs and connect with decision-makers. For visitors, it offered a comprehensive look at the technologies shaping next-generation electronics. And for the industry at large, the 50th anniversary served as both a celebration and a reminder: Electronics manufacturing remains one of the most dynamic, innovative, and strategically important sectors in the world.

I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week
12/05/2025 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007It’s been another big week in global business news with positive projections on global economic growth, primarily driven by AI. U.S. labor markets are showing some strain after copious layoff activity, and there’s possibly a slight “correction” in the stock market, with investors apparently concerned about corporate overvaluation. My must-reads are interesting, informative, and important for industry members, particularly in the U.S. These selections range from onshoring high-tech thermal control to the value of training, recognizing interconnect defects, and an important statement from the Global Electronics Association regarding the USMCA.
