Pullman School District Sale of Aquatic Center to SEL Finalized
December 22, 2025 | SELEstimated reading time: 1 minute
The Pullman School District is pleased to announce the finalized sale of the Pullman Aquatic & Fitness Center to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), marking a new chapter for the facility as it celebrates its 25th year of operation.
Originally built in 2000 with a $2.5 million gift from the Schweitzer family, the aquatic center has served as a hub for health, recreation and community connection across the Palouse. The $5 million investment split between SEL and Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer III, and his wife, Beatriz, will ensure the center remains open to the public.
As part of this transition, SEL will rename the facility the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center—a name that honors the Schweitzer family’s original gift and ongoing support, while reflecting a commitment to communitywide health and wellness.
“This facility has been a cornerstone of our community for 25 years,” said Dr. Bob Maxwell, superintendent of Pullman Public Schools. “We’re grateful to the Schweitzers and SEL for taking action to ensure this resource continues to serve and support future generations.”
SEL plans to make improvements to the center. Renovations will include facility upgrades to enhance safety, user experience and energy efficiency. The company also plans to expand hours and maintain affordable access for students, families and seniors.
“SEL is pleased to continue partnering with the Pullman School District on its use of the center for the PHS swim teams and activities, and to carry forward the great work the City of Pullman has done through its programming,” said Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer III, SEL founder. “We feel this is very much in keeping with the SEL value of Community and our belief in supporting places where people can connect, learn and grow.”
“We are so happy to help ensure this valued community asset remains a welcoming space for people of all ages,” said Beatriz Schweitzer.
