Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Amtech Partners with Apple Manufacturing Academy to Drive Onshoring and Global Competitiveness
January 9, 2026 | Amtech ElectrocircuitsEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
Amtech Electrocircuits, a leading provider of manufacturing solutions, has been selected to participate in the Apple Manufacturing Academy (AMA), a hands-on operational excellence program led by Apple in partnership with Michigan State University.
The AMA offers immersive, on-site learning focused on real production challenges rather than traditional classroom instruction. Participating companies work through structured exercises emphasizing consistency, execution, and system-level thinking. Since its launch in August 2025, the program has hosted monthly workshops in Detroit with more than 100 manufacturers nationwide, while select participants receive extended consultancy and technical support from Apple engineers.
Positioning Amtech as a Globally Competitive Onshoring Partner
Through this collaboration, Amtech intends to leverage Apple’s expertise to modernize its manufacturing approach, positioning the company as a globally competitive option for onshoring and reshoring U.S. electronics production.
Modernizing Operations for a Global Market
CEO Jay Patel is actively participating in the program and highlights the tangible benefits for Amtech’s operations: “You can see why Apple is successful,” Patel said. “The way they structure work, train teams, and focus on execution is helping us modernize our manufacturing approach, so we can compete globally while supporting onshoring and reshoring initiatives.”
Hands-On Technical Engagement
Apple engineers bring deep operational expertise to tackle real-world manufacturing challenges. Participants have received customized guidance to implement sensors, analytics, and AI-based tools that optimize processes such as quality inspection and downtime reduction, delivering substantial cost savings compared to traditional consulting.
Learning, Not Copying
The Academy emphasizes repetition, clarity, and hands-on problem solving. This approach has prompted Amtech to refine team training, communication, and accountability on the production floor.
“This isn’t about copying Apple,” Patel said. “It’s about applying lessons from world-class operations to make us stronger, more efficient, and better positioned for our customers.”
Investing in U.S. Manufacturing Excellence
The AMA is part of Apple’s broader commitment to strengthening U.S. manufacturing, helping small and medium-sized businesses adopt advanced technologies including automation, AI, and data-driven quality systems. Amtech expects customers to see direct benefits through improved responsiveness, stronger process discipline, and continued operational excellence.

Road to Reliability: Engineering High Uptime EV Charging Infrastructure
05/13/2026 | Stanton Rak, SF Rak CompanyThe transition to EVs is no longer constrained solely by vehicle capability. Instead, it is increasingly defined by a simpler, but more unforgiving question: Will the charger work when I arrive? This high uptime does not happen by accident. As EV technology has matured, limitations in battery range, power electronics, and thermal management are no longer the primary barriers to adoption.
