EMS Leaders Express Optimism Through Growth and Expansion
March 18, 2026 | Mark Wolfe, Global Electronics AssociationEstimated reading time: 1 minute
It was a strong opening day for APEX EXPO 2026, with a keynote by Zach Kass on the AI revolution, followed by a ribbon-cutting to officially open the event, which featured Irish dancers on this St. Patrick’s Day, and opening remarks by Global Electronics Association CEO John Mitchell.
But I’d like to tell you about the EMS Leadership Summit on Monday, where approximately 60 EMS industry leaders from 40 companies participated. There were several speakers, a panel discussion, and discussion groups.
At a high level, the group expressed optimism, with roughly two-thirds of companies reporting growth and expecting continued expansion in 2026. Inventories are balanced at both the raw-material and customer levels, suggesting the industry has returned to a more normalized environment. Hiring plans also indicated increasing confidence.
AI has clearly transitioned from curiosity to early adoption, with companies beginning to apply it to real operational challenges such as visibility, quoting, and data analysis. One of the barriers is now cultural—building workforce trust that AI is an aid to productivity rather than a threat. At the same time, data integrity and systems integration are becoming more visible as constraints, as fragmented ERP, MES, and data environments limit the ability to fully leverage AI and improve decision-making.
External volatility—tariffs, cost pressures, and geopolitical factors—remains present but is increasingly viewed as manageable.
The next phase of performance will be determined by how effectively companies continue to integrate systems, develop workforce capability, and use AI to extend human judgment. Those that do will unlock meaningful productivity and responsiveness gains; those that do not risk falling behind, not because of market conditions, but because of slower adoption of new technologies and tools.
APEX EXPO continues Wednesday and Thursday and I look forward to learning more about how AI is being integrated into so many facets of our industry.

How Are You Vetting Your Supply Chain?
04/28/2026 | Didrik Bech, CONFIDEEFor many years, supplier management was largely focused on standard commercial priorities: cost, quality, lead time, and delivery performance. If a supplier met specifications, shipped on time, and remained price competitive, the relationship was often considered healthy. However, the world has changed.
Global Sourcing Spotlight: Building a Supply Chain That Bends, Not Breaks
04/29/2026 | Bob Duke -- Column: Global Sourcing SpotlightThe global supply chain is a complex, interdependent, and shifting organism. In the past few years, pandemics, tariffs, wars, natural disasters, and transportation chaos have tested it like never before, revealing that fragility is expensive. The companies that survive do so not through luck but through resiliency. For decades, companies built sourcing strategies around the illusion of stability—one supplier, region, and price. It worked until a port closed, a single supplier went down, or a production line froze.

New Guidance Targets Scope 3.1 Emissions Gap in Electronics Supply Chains
04/22/2026 | I-Connect007 Editorial TeamA new industry guidance document aimed at improving how electronics companies account for Scope 3 Category 1 (Scope 3.1) emissions marks a significant step toward more consistent and effective supply chain decarbonization. A recent webinar hosted by the Global Electronics Association and the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) addressed a persistent challenge: Despite the material impact of Scope 3.1 emissions, fewer than half of electronics companies currently report them.
SMTA Ultra HDI Symposium, Day 1: AI at the Core or Out of the Game
04/13/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007It was a beautiful 81°F morning in Arizona last Wednesday as I headed to the third annual SMTA Ultra HDI Symposium, focused on AI and ultra high density interconnect technology. Strategically held as part of Arizona’s Tech Week, this year’s conference took place in Avondale in Phoenix's West Valley. The event moved from the cozy offices of the Peoria Sports Complex (which paid homage to baseball’s spring training world) to the larger Avondale Conference Center, highlighting the importance of this area for electronics manufacturing investment.
