It's Only Common Sense: Why the Best Years of Electronics Are Still Ahead of Us
Every so often, someone asks me if I think the electronics industry has already experienced its glory days. Usually, the question comes after another news story about supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, geopolitical tensions, or economic uncertainty. My answer never changes. I believe we're at the beginning of the most exciting era in the history of electronics manufacturing.
That may sound optimistic to some, especially when so much attention is focused on today's challenges. But I've spent my entire career watching this industry, and I've learned that the biggest opportunities often arrive disguised as the biggest problems. When demand grows faster than companies can keep up with, challenges naturally follow. It’s a sign that the industry is expanding.
Virtually every major technology trend shaping our future depends on increasingly sophisticated electronics. AI, robotics, advanced medical technology, aerospace systems, defense electronics, electric vehicles, industrial automation, next-generation communications, and intelligent infrastructure all have one thing in common: None can exist without advanced electronic design, manufacturing, and assembly. The future is becoming more electronic every single day.
Here are my thoughts on each of these sectors.
AI Models
Behind every AI model are massive data centers filled with high-performance processors, advanced memory systems, networking equipment, power management technologies, and incredibly complex electronic packaging. Every breakthrough in AI requires another breakthrough somewhere within the electronics manufacturing ecosystem. As AI expands into virtually every industry, so too will the need for more sophisticated PCBs, IC substrates, semiconductor packaging, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Robotics
Robots are no longer found only on automotive assembly lines. They’re entering hospitals, warehouses, manufacturing plants, farms, construction sites, laboratories, airports, restaurants, and even private homes. As these systems become more intelligent and capable, their electronic complexity increases dramatically. Every robot requires sensors, processors, communications systems, power management, control systems, and increasingly sophisticated electronic assemblies. The growth of robotics represents decades of opportunity for companies throughout our industry.
Medical Devices
Healthcare is moving toward smaller, smarter, more connected devices that improve patient outcomes while reducing costs. Wearable health monitors, implantable medical devices, robotic surgical systems, remote diagnostic equipment, imaging technologies, and AI-assisted healthcare platforms all require extraordinary advances in electronics manufacturing. Aging populations around the world are creating sustained demand for these technologies. So, don’t look at this as a temporary trend driven by market cycles. It is a long-term demographic shift that will generate opportunities for years to come.
Aerospace and Defense
Commercial aviation demands lighter, more reliable electronic systems, while the rapidly expanding space industry requires components capable of performing under some of the harshest conditions imaginable. Satellites, launch vehicles, advanced communications systems, autonomous defense platforms, radar systems, guidance technologies, and electronic warfare capabilities all depend on sophisticated electronics that simply were not possible a generation ago. Governments and private industry alike continue investing billions of dollars into these technologies because they understand their strategic importance.
Automotive
Whether powered by gasoline, electricity, hydrogen, or a future technology, modern automobiles have become highly sophisticated electronic platforms. Advanced driver assistance systems, battery management, navigation, entertainment, connectivity, safety systems, autonomous driving capabilities, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications all rely on complex electronics. The automobile has evolved into a computer on wheels, and that evolution is accelerating.
Industrial Automation
Manufacturers around the world are investing in smart factories, intelligent equipment, predictive maintenance, connected production systems, and real-time process monitoring. Companies are collecting enormous amounts of operational data to improve productivity, quality, efficiency, and competitiveness. Each improvement depends on advanced electronics working reliably under demanding conditions. As manufacturers pursue greater automation and digital transformation, demand for sophisticated electronic systems will grow.
Seeing the Bigger Picture
Every major growth industry of the coming decades depends on electronics. Every new technological breakthrough creates additional demand somewhere within the electronics supply chain. Every innovation requires engineers, designers, manufacturers, assemblers, materials experts, and technology partners capable of turning ambitious ideas into reliable products.
This perspective also changes how we should view many of today's challenges. Supply chain disruptions certainly created significant difficulties over the past several years, but they also revealed just how much demand exists throughout our industry. Supply chains become strained when customers want more products than manufacturers can efficiently deliver. That situation requires better planning, diversified sourcing, stronger partnerships, and increased manufacturing capacity. Those are important business challenges, but they are fundamentally different from the problems faced by industries experiencing declining demand.
The same principle applies to workforce shortages. Nearly every company I know is searching for talented engineers, technicians, operators, programmers, and manufacturing professionals. While recruiting is difficult, that challenge largely stems from companies' growth and investment. Organizations hire people when opportunities expand, not when markets disappear. The shortage of skilled talent reflects the tremendous opportunities our industry has created.
History consistently shows that the companies that emerge as long-term market leaders are rarely the ones that wait for perfect conditions before making important investments. Instead, they continue to strengthen their engineering capabilities, improve manufacturing technologies, develop their workforce, expand customer relationships, and invest in innovation, even during periods of uncertainty. They understand that markets eventually recover, technology advances, and customer needs evolve. By the time economic confidence fully returns, these companies have already positioned themselves well ahead of their competitors.
Perhaps the greatest opportunity lies in the growing importance of knowledge itself. As products become more complex, customers need partners that contribute engineering expertise rather than simple manufacturing capacity. These companies must understand DFM, reliability, advanced materials, miniaturization, thermal management, signal integrity, and system-level performance. Helping to solve difficult engineering challenges will distinguish you from your competitors that are focused solely on price.
So, I remain extraordinarily optimistic about the future. The technologies transforming our world are all built upon advanced electronics. We are witnessing the beginning of a new era. If we focus on where this industry is going instead of where it has been, I believe we will discover that the best years of electronics are not behind us at all. They are still ahead.
