Manufacturers across the electronics industry continue to report the same challenge: How do I find qualified people? At first glance, this appears to be a labor shortage, but the data reveals a more nuanced story.
According to Deloitte1 and The Manufacturing Institute,2 the U.S. manufacturing sector will need approximately 3.8 million new workers between 2024 and 2033. Without significant improvements in workforce development and recruitment, an estimated 1.9 million of those positions could go unfilled. At the same time, nearly 60% of manufacturers surveyed by the National Association of Manufacturers identified attracting and retaining employees as their top business challenge.
Electronics manufacturers face an additional challenge that broad manufacturing statistics do not fully capture: Many positions require experience that is difficult to develop outside the industry and are not interchangeable skill sets. For example:
- A process engineer may need experience with SMT assembly, stencil printing, reflow profiling, AOI, and SPC
- A quality engineer may be expected to understand IPC-A-610, IPC-J-STD-001, root cause analysis, and failure analysis
- PCB designers are increasingly asked to work with controlled impedance, HDI, RF layouts, high-speed digital interfaces, and DFM requirements
- Fabricators need plating engineers, CAM specialists, imaging technicians, and process engineers with knowledge that is specific to printed circuit manufacturing
This creates a hiring problem that cannot be solved by application volume alone.
General employment platforms are designed to maximize visibility. They are effective at attracting applicants, but they are not designed to meet the technical requirements of the electronics industry. A manufacturing engineer with experience in food processing, medical devices, or automotive production may be highly qualified in those fields yet lack the process knowledge required for electronics manufacturing.
