I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week

09/18/2026 | Nolan Johnson, I-Connect007
The middle months of 2026 have been defined by, shall we say, “projects” throughout the industry, and as we approach the end of the third quarter, many of those projects are coming to light. That’s the theme I’m getting from this week’s news, and I tried to capture it with my selections. My must-reads include a market update on the leading fabless semiconductor houses, a call to action from SEMI directed at the policymakers in the European Union, a rollup of workforce and educational programs announced just this week, a role change at Indium, and the relaunch of the Global Electronics Association Sustainability teams’ DMA Toolkit.

Elementary, Mr. Watson: The Rise and Fall of Europe's PCB Design Community

09/16/2026 | John Watson -- Column: Elementary, Mr. Watson
One of the most famous lines associated with the attack on Pearl Harbor was attributed to Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. After the horrific attack of Dec. 7, 1941, he was reported to declare, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant." That image has endured because it captured the moment when something enormous, and perhaps underestimated, began to move. Today, another giant is awakening in Europe, and it may not be what or where you expect. It’s not from one country, company, or organization, but from an entire region that has built a deep engineering heritage and a long history in electronics. At the center is Europe’s PCB design community.

An Open Invitation to Standards Development in Paris

09/14/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007
The Global Electronics Association is doing something a little different around standards this year. IPC Builds, Sept. 19–24, in Paris, is a series of standards development meetings open to both Association members and nonmembers, offered at no charge, with lunch provided. Sponsoring an event like this at no charge caught my attention. Removing any registration cost clearly removes a barrier to participation at a time when global input into standards development is needed more than ever. An open forum naturally makes it easier for someone who is curious about standards work or has wanted to get involved but hasn’t yet taken the first step to experience the process firsthand, with no risk or expectation.
