Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Axiom Named Top Manufacturer in Wales
November 2, 2015 | Axiom Manufacturing ServicesEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
Axiom Manufacturing Services has been named 2015 Manufacturer of the Year in the prestigious Made in Wales Awards, announced at Cardiff City Hall on 21st October.
In recognition of the company’s strong investment, growth and job creation over the past five years Axiom was chosen by judges from among scores of leading Welsh enterprises for the top title.
The Made in Wales Awards which are in their fifth year, are organised by the nationwide Business Insider magazine and were set up to celebrate the achievements of companies that make, develop and design products in Wales.
In their report judges noted that Axiom’s growth over the past five years had outstripped the industry average four times over, that its already strong sales had doubled and its skilled workforce had expanded by nearly 25%.
“The growth in orders, revenue and new customers in a highly-competitive market is very impressive,” said one judge.
The judges chose Axiom from a shortlist of finalists which also included GE Aviation, international plastics product manufacturer, Mollertech, and semiconductor production equipment maker SPTS.
The company’s growth over the past decade has made it one of Britain’s leading contract electronics manufacturers serving industrial, medical, defence and aerospace markets.
Axiom’s success was announced to a package gathering of Wales’ leading industrialists at Cardiff City Hall, hosted by high-profile television present Jason Mohammed.
Insider editor Douglas Friedli told guests: "When we started these awards, you could still hear people say that manufacturing is dead in the UK, and that everything is made in China. Well, that wasn’t true then and it’s even less true now. In some cases, Welsh companies design products that are made in whole or in part outside Wales. That’s useful too – Wales gets value and good jobs out of the deal. We’re making more products, and the industries represented here are employing more staff."
Axiom took the top overall title on the night with other categories including: Manufacturing Innovation, Creative Design, Technology, Food & Drink Manufacturer, Green Manufacturer, Apprenticeship Scheme of the Year, Exporter of the Year, Advanced Manufacturer and New Product.
Commenting on the success David Davies, Managing Director of Axiom said: “We set ourselves very high standards in terms of innovation, quality and growth and it’s very gratifying for our whole workforce to see our work recognised in this way. Wales has many excellent manufacturers so we are immensely proud to be chosen as the best in a very strong field of competitors.”

Podcast Hits the Mark in a Materials Market
04/15/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007The base material of a printed circuit board is its literal and functional foundation. Isola, founded in 1912 in Düren, Germany, is one of the longest-standing manufacturers of glass-reinforced laminates in the electronics industry. Originally focused on insulation and fiberglass materials, the company played an early role in supplying the foundational substrates that enabled the growth of PCB technology. As electronics advanced, Isola evolved alongside the industry, expanding from basic glass-epoxy laminates into high-performance copper-clad materials and engineered prepregs.

SMTA Ultra HDI Symposium, Day 1: AI at the Core or Out of the Game
04/13/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007It was a beautiful 81°F morning in Arizona last Wednesday as I headed to the third annual SMTA Ultra HDI Symposium, focused on AI and ultra high density interconnect technology. Strategically held as part of Arizona’s Tech Week, this year’s conference took place in Avondale in Phoenix's West Valley. The event moved from the cozy offices of the Peoria Sports Complex (which paid homage to baseball’s spring training world) to the larger Avondale Conference Center, highlighting the importance of this area for electronics manufacturing investment.
