Flex Connections: Is a Printed Silver Ink Circuit Right for Your Application?

Column By: Terrill Schmidt
October 27, 2026
When is the right time to design a flexible circuit with printed ink, usually silver, vs. a flexible etched copper circuit, a die-cut copper circuit, or a die-cut aluminum circuit? First, a flexible circuit design must work in the application as designed and be cost-effective so the end product can be sold or used. What drives a designer to choose between an etched copper circuit, printed ink, flat flexible cable, die-cut copper, or die-cut aluminum? Multiple factors influence the design.

Flex Connections: Material Selection in Nickel vs. Copper Tabs

Flexible printed circuits are being designed to do more than route signals. In many applications, the flex circuit must also provide robust electrical interfaces, mechanical reinforcement, and reliable transitions between the circuit and surrounding assemblies. One effective way to accomplish this is by integrating copper or nickel tabs directly into a flexible printed circuit.

Flex Connections: Four Lessons in Engineering Judgment for PCB Designers

Column By: Dan Skweres
August 20, 2026
In my more than four decades in the industry, I’ve watched design tools and manufacturing capabilities evolve in ways we could hardly have imagined when I started, touching everything from conventional rigid boards to today’s highly sophisticated flexible and rigid-flex circuits. But anyone with meaningful experience in the PCB industry can relate to the phrase, “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”
