Electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider Flex has released its 2016 Global Citizenship Report, which summarizes its worldwide social and environmental activities, performance and results for calendar year 2015, providing a look at some of the work Flex employees do to contribute to a better world.
Key achievements cited in the report include:
- Reduced CO2 emissions by 20 percent, exceeding the company's revenue-based goal
- Achieved goal of 15 percent reduction in Injury and Occupational Disease Incidents
- Reduced electrical use by more than 25,700 MWh/year by installing Flex designed and built LED light fixtures in facilities in 12 countries
- Recycled 647,000 m3 of water during 2015, equivalent to the annual water consumption of 1,170 homes
- Named to Fortune's "World's Most Admired Companies" list
"This past year we expanded our sustainability program to include global corporate citizenship in addition to social and environmental leadership," said Mike McNamara, Flex CEO. "In one sense, this serves to formalize some central elements of our culture – which we believe is key to the strength and resiliency of our organization – including our commitment to protect the environment, treat our people with respect and dignity and improve the communities where we live and work."
The 2016 report includes plans for future global citizenship activities, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and outlines Flex's commitment to 20 goals for 2020. Flex will report progress toward these goals twice per year through its external website.
Rigid-flex circuits are unique structures; part rigid board and part flex, they’re increasingly working their way into many of the electronic devices we use every day. There have been many advances in rigid-flex lately as more companies find themselves exploring this technology. So, before I started writing this article about rigid-flex design, I double-checked a few things. Fortunately, there is plenty of rigid-flex information available on a variety of great websites that we all know and trust.
The latest “Automotive Display Market Analysis” from TrendForce indicates that the overall demand for automotive display panels (automotive panels) is gradually stabilizing and shows an upward trend as the automotive market as a whole slowly recovers, and promotional activities related to smart cockpits continue to expand.
Zhen Ding Technology Holding Ltd, a Taiwan-based company engaged in the design, development, and manufacturing of printed circuit board (PCBs) including rigid PCBs, flex PCBs, HDIs, substrate-like PCBs (SLP), and rigid-flex PCBs, has posted sales of NT$13.78 billion ($429.15 million at $1:NT$32.12) for August 2023, up by 33.7% from the previous month. Year-on-year, the company’s August revenue was down by just 16.65%.
Despite what some seem to believe, rigid-flex circuits are not a new technology. In fact, they are more than a half-century old. At the time of the invention, my friend Thomas Sterns was working at Sanders Associates, the pioneering flex circuit manufacturer. Like many products in the first decades of printed circuit technology, they were working on a military application. The objective was to provide a reliable method for reducing the size, bulk, weight, and questionable reliability of wire harness assemblies while simultaneously reducing cost and assuring that human error might be minimized. These were all vitally important concerns for military and aerospace products.
