Leading smartphone manufacturer Vivo has been recognized as having the 5th-highest shipment volume among global smartphone manufacturers per IDC's 2017 Q1 report. This recognition comes as Vivo has been expanding its global research and development (R&D) capabilities, with a focus on 5G technologies and integrating them into its cutting-edge smartphones.
"We're very pleased that our team's hard work and dedication has been recognized by IDC in their latest industry survey," said Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo. "Over 100 million end users around the world have chosen our smartphones, and we expect that number to grow as we roll out new technologies and 5G-compatible features in future smartphone models."
To drive future breakthroughs that will take their smartphones' performance and user experience to the next level, Vivo has established seven R&D centers worldwide, including two in Silicon Valley and San Diego, as well as five in Shenzhen, Dongguan, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Beijing, China, where it will continue to develop in-house smartphone technologies including 5G, mobile camera, and Hi-Fi music technologies that appeal to its customers.
"Our building of a research center network is the evidence of our focus on becoming an integrated smartphone technology innovator that is driven to meet customer needs," continued Feng.
5G Research Institute Prepares Company for the 5G Era
At Vivo's Beijing R&D center the company engages in the research of new 5G technologies. Engineers leverage their insights into more than 100 million of Vivo's global smartphone users' experience to develop 5G technology that offers an upgraded user experience.
Some of the group's work was presented at the 2017 Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) Summit on Feb. 23 in Barcelona. The company disclosed its breakthrough high-power user equipment technology.
Talking about the future of smartphones, Qin Fei, Director of Vivo's 5G research institute, said, "Vivo believes that as the computational abilities of smartphones increase, these devices will be capable of deep learning. Future smartphones will have enhanced communication abilities and will be able to cooperate with intelligent computing centers within the 5G network to provide intelligent services for consumers. The interaction of smartphones and the cloud computing center will require higher performance, higher speed and lower cost from 5G radio networks."
Advanced Photography Developments Upgrade User Experience
The company's Hangzhou R&D center is responsible for photography technology research, while the institutes in Silicon Valley and San Diego are focused on core technologies that support Vivo's fundamental algorithm photography technology development.
3GPP plans to finalize the first release of 5G standards in 2018, and 5G is expected to be commercialized in 2020. "5G smartphones will be integrated with artificial intelligence technologies, becoming even more intelligent than the human brain. Vivo's 5G smartphone will be the users constant companion, learning his or her daily routine and habits, and becoming the ultimate personal assistant with excellent user experience." Qin said.
