August 3, 2007 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. The global handset market will experience design, component, and assembly changes by 2012, caused by Apple's iPhone offerings, alternative networks, mobile video and TV, and corporate-liable subscriptions, according to In-Stat's report, "Big Trends Influencing the Global Handset Market."
The report references Apple's use of novel technologies for the handset market touch-screen displays and motion sensors that require adapted assembly capabilities at cell-phone manufacturing facilities, as well as various semiconductors previously uncommon to the handset bill of materials (BOM). In-Stat also asserts that business and consumer handset users will drive dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi device development. Mobile broadcast networks bringing video and TV to cellular devices and media players will promote the use of next-generation semiconductors, applications, and displays that optimize viewing.
The report includes a U.S. consumer survey on current handset usage, problems, and enhancements that next-generation devices should ideally include. To learn more, visit www.instat.com.
