VCA Will Enforce WEEE in U.K.
May 18, 2007 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
LONDON The U.K. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) appointed the Vehicle certification Agency (VCA) to oversee Waste Electrical and Electronic (WEEE) enforcement with regards to distributor obligations. The WEEE directive places most responsibility for end-of-life electronics recycling on distributors of end products.
The VCA is instructed to serve notice or prosecute distributors that do not become compliant with obligations under the WEEE directive, said Malcolm Wicks, Science and Innovation Minister, DTI. These include providing recycling facilities for consumers replacing end-of-life electronics and electrical products, and informing consumers on proper e-waste disposal and the environmental benefits of WEEE.
Distributors can either join the distributor takeback scheme (DTS) with local, authorized collection points for returned e-waste; or accept electrical and electronic goods returns at stores. The deadline for compliance is July 1, 2007.
