Inductor Needs No Internal Soldering
July 31, 2006 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
SAN DIEGO Pulse, a Technitrol company, added the PG0426NL series to its flat-coil power inductor family. Made of rectangular-copper wire wound helically, the inductor is said to provide a larger surface area than those using round wire, with a lower profile volume. These flat-coil inductor windings also create self-terminating leads, circumventing internal solder work. Inductance values in the series range from 1.5 to 0.1 µH.
The inductors' direct current resistance (DCR) of 11.8 to 1.5 mΩ is said to reduce copper losses and maximize current ratings for components. Peak saturation current for the inductors equals 60 A, though the maximum operating current rating reaches 34.5 A. Target applications include voltage regulator modules (VRMs) for computers, workstations, point-of-load (POL) converters, and situations with high density and temperatures.
Surface mountable and self-leaded because of the copper-wire formations, the inductors measure 7.5- × 7.0- × 3.2-mm a 2525 footprint. The core material for the series resists thermal aging to 150°C. They are RoHS- and EIA481-compliant.
