Speaking of this Week summarizes and analyzes events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
News this week is split pretty evenly between progress and personnel news. There are also announcements regarding upcoming shows and financial news.
- Progress news, comin' at ya. Ready? Franklin, Mass.-based Speedline Technologies Inc. was awarded a patent for its enhanced system of post-print 2-D inspection, and UK-based ERA Technology received a contract from the European Commission for review of specific exemptions under the RoHS Directive. Methuen, Mass.-based Lightspeed Manufacturing marked its first anniversary, and is seeing a rapid increase in orders. San Jose, Calif.-based Cadence Design Systems Inc. completed renovations of the EDA lab at the Prague-based Czech Technical University, as part of its University Partner Program. Elkton, Md.-based W.L. Gore & Associates Inc. launched an electronic products online store, and San Diego-based Pulse, a Technitrol company, announced a redesigned Web site. WKK received a Best Customer Award from NEPCON, honoring the fact that the company's one of the largest purchasers of booth space worldwide. Finally, Canada-based EXFO announced that it would consolidated its Photonics and Life Sciences divisions, and Jersey City, N.J.-based Cookson Electronics Assembly Materials increased its prices on its IPA-based flux product line, based on the 78 percent increase in IPA prices since last June.
- Personnel news: Milpitas, Calif.-based Solectron Corp. appointed EMS industry veteran Marty Neese as vice president of Worldwide Sales and Account Management, while Willow Grove, Pa.-based Tyco Electronics Automation Group added Mike Tam as marketing manager for Asia-Pacific. Vancouver, BC-based Nam Tai Electronics Inc. has a new CFO and assistant CFO in Charles C. Wong and Joseph Edward Silva, respectively. Pittsburgh-based HumiSeal announced that Vice President John Waryold retired after 44 years with the company. Rhode Island-based AIM appointed Cluff and Associates as its manufacturers' rep for Colorado, and Ron Huston, CEO of Aurora, Colo.-based Advanced Circuits was named one of the best bosses in the country by Fortune Small Business. Finally, Hollis, N.H.-based JPSA Laser is seeking manufacturers' reps in the U.S. and Europe to sell its systems.
- In trade show news, San Diego-based KIC and Norcross, Ga.-based Siemens Dematic AG will be exhibiting at ATE next week, in booths 5015 and 5609, respectively. And the Wisconsin Chapter of the Minneapolis-based SMTA will hold an Electronics Assembly Technology Forum in mid-October in Waukesha, Wis.
- Finally, in financial news, Lake Success, N.Y.-based Park Electrochemical Corp. declared a dividend of 6 cents per share.
