Speaking of this Week -- April 25, 2003
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
By Christine F. Della Monaca
Speaking of this Week reflects on events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
The news this week is as varied as the flowers finally coming up around my mailbox. We've got lots of companies coming together; tradeshow, progress and personnel news; and more sketches of the industry past and future than I've seen in a long time through predictions and forecasts. Read on:
- Distribution agreements, as well as mergers and acquisitions: Phoenix-based Duraswitch licensee Tastitalia S.p.A., based in Italy, will promote six new Duraswitch technologies at Fotronic-Electronics Forum 2003 at the beginning of May in Padova, Italy. In distribution agreement news, Marlborough, Mass.-based Shipley Co. LLC named San Clemente, Calif.-based Unichem Industries Inc. as the exclusive distributor for its North American processing equipment used in printed wiring board (PWB) manufacture. Meanwhile, Erlanger, Ky.-based SENKO America Corp. is the first non-exclusive North American distributor of the Sumitomo Wiring System (SWS) line of connector products, while Honda Motor Co. Ltd. chose Manchester, England-based Teradyne Diagnostic Solutions, a division of Boston-based Teradyne Inc., as its next generation service diagnostics provider. Finally, Irvine, Calif.-based HID Corp. acquired the card and reader business of Dorado Products Inc.
- Tradeshow news: Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC -- Association Connecting Electronics Industries honored best papers at both its Printed Circuits Expo and APEX, as well as offered a sneak peek at its 2003 Spring Technology Market Research Council (TMRC) Meeting held next month. Similarly, the Minneapolis-based SMTA looked ahead to SMTA International, held in the fall in Rosemont, Ill.
- Progress continues: Ken Cavallaro, former president of Camelot Systems Inc., launched a new consulting company, West Newbury, Mass.-based Riverview Partners Inc. Over at Binghamton, N.Y.-based Universal Instruments Corp., there's a new online auction system on the company's Web site. Finally, Sanmina-SCI Corp.'s Montreal facility will implement San Jose, Calif.-based Datasweep Inc.'s Advantage suite for collaboration with customers, while Duraswitch's Large-Key PushGate technology was designed into a treadmill control panel.
- Two news hires over at West Haven, Conn.-based Enthone Inc.: Professor Andreas Moebius, Ph.D. is the company's new R&D fellow, while John Yim was appointed to vice president sales, Asia. Finally, San Jose, Calif.-based Indala named Kevin Caufield as sales manager for the eastern region of the U.S.
- Finally, a whole smattering of predictions and forecasts: Norwalk, Conn.-based Business Communications Co. Inc. sees the U.S. demand for EMI/RFI shielding options rising from $523 million in 2002 to $630 million by 2008. Meanwhile, Natick, Mass.-based VDC sees the U.S. market for pressure switches showing a 0.2 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2003 to 2006, and Scottsdale, Ariz.-based In-Stat/MDR forecasts a strong increase in customer demand for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in the 2004 through 2005 time frame, translating into revenue growth in 2006 and 2007. Finally, Alameda, Calif.-based Technology Forecasters Inc. is getting ready to release the first comprehensive study comparing electronics manufacturing pricing in countries around the world. Look for it in May.
This just in: According to this week's Quick Vote, 94 percent of you say your company puts a great deal of emphasis on customer service, while 3 percent weigh in with "some emphasis" and 3 percent more say not a lot of emphasis.
