PXI Systems Alliance Releases New PXI Specifications
April 10, 2003 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
San Diego -- The PXI Systems Alliance (PXISA) has released new PXI specifications that enhances the requirements and separates the hardware and software specifications, allowing each to evolve separately in the future as required by PXI standards.
The new PXI specifications include:
- Enhancing power requirements, allowing designers to add more functionality to their PXI instrument designs;
- Provisions for a dual stack 3U architecture, which allows 6U chassis to support a greater number of instruments;
- Geographic addressing, providing a better mechanism for slot and chassis identification for PXI modules; and
- Improving the hardware description framework, allowing better PXI resource management for PXI configuration software.
PXI (PCI Extensions for Instrumentation) was developed to bridge the gap between desktop PC systems and high-end VXI and GPIB systems. The PXISA, which was formed in 1998 by manufacturers and systems integrators, is tasked with maintaining the PXI specification, ensuring multi-vendor interoperability, and promoting the benefits of PXI to the related industries. The PXI specification defines system-level hardware and software requirements for cPCI products used in test and measurement, industrial automation and data acquisition applications.
PXISA, formed in 1998, is a global non-profit organization of manufacturers and systems integrators who share a common commitment to making end-users successful with CompactPCI-based measurement and automation solutions. For more information, visit www.pxisa.org.
