Jabil Expands ServicesST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Jabil Circuit Inc. further expanded Jabil Technology Services by establishing three new design centers, located in Bergamo, Italy; Penang, Malaysia; and Raleigh, N.C.
"We are continuing to expand our capabilities to better service our global customers," said Jeff Lumetta, vice president of Jabil Technology Services. "By driving technological innovations we can assist our customers as technology demands on them increase."
The new centers will house electrical and mechanical design services, global test services, printed circuit board (PCB) layout services and advanced manufacturing technology research.
"We are answering the needs of our customers by offering original design for manufacturing (ODM) capability within the EMS business model," Lumetta continued. "We provide a broad array of services, including advanced optic design, RF design and the manufacturing solutions necessary to quickly realize volume production."
Environmental Award Presented to SpartonJACKSON, Mich. Sparton Electronics was awarded the L.L. Hedgepeth Award for its outstanding environmental efforts at the 2001 Florida Water Resources Conference in mid-April. The L.L. Hedgepeth Award was established in 1960 by the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) to recognize extraordinary industrial wastewater treatment. Sparton also was commended for its efforts in maintaining internal environmental programs along with community involvement in various activities.
Sparton is now in its 101st year, and provides high-mix, low- to medium-volume electronics contract manufacturing (CM) services through six manufacturing locations, along with facilities from a 10-alliance partnership throughout North America and Europe.
Theta Group ExpandsHUNTSVILLE, Ala. Theta Group Inc. established a new division, Electronic Manufacturing Systems. The new division will serve as the company's manufacturer's representative in southeastern United States, with offices in Huntsville, Ala.
Electronic Manufacturing Systems will seek to represent other companies of equipment used by the electronics assembly market and in need of representation in the southeast. The company will employ professional sales personnel with experience in capital equipment sales and will provide assistance to its customers integrating new technology into existing production lines, or replacing antiquated technology lines with the latest technology.
New Appointments at Group TechnologiesTAMPA, Fla. Group Technologies Corp. (GroupTech), a subsidiary of Sypris Solutions Inc. announced several new appointments.
David Monaco joined the executive management team as vice president of finance. He is responsible for providing the financial leadership necessary for the company to achieve its strategic objectives.
Additionally, Edmund Stuczynski joined the company as vice president of operations. He came to GroupTech from ITT where he spent the last 16 years, most recently as vice president of operations for their Aerospace/Communications division in Fort Wayne, Ind. In his new position, Stuczynski is responsible for supply chain management, production engineering, product assurance and manufacturing operations, reporting directly to Jim Cocke, president and CEO.
Finally, Ray Minter was appointed vice president of programs. In this newly formed position, Minter will be responsible for the company's program management organization, as well as retaining his current responsibilities for advanced programs and marketing. Before the new appointment, he was serving as vice president of business development.
Commenting on the new position, Minter said, "Combining the business development and program management organizations will give us the opportunity to better focus on the unique needs of each customer from the pursuit of new business all the way through to execution and fulfillment."
Amkor, Shinko Align; Amkor Receives AwardCHANDLER, Ariz. Two major suppliers to the semiconductor industry are combining forces on joint product development and cross licensing of existing assembly and packaging patents. Amkor Technology, assembly and test provider, and Shinko Electric Industries Co. Ltd. signed a two-year agreement to jointly develop activities and granting access to each other's patents and technology. The agreement gives each company a competitive advantage in their respective markets.
It also may provide significant benefits to the customers of both companies, including access to a greatly expanded patent portfolio, the opportunity to evaluate new packaging and assembly processes, and materials and exclusivity on new materials.
"The agreement is important because through joint development, both Shinko and Amkor will have access to the latest in materials and assembly technology," said Richard Groover, vice president of flip chip development for Amkor.
Using Amkor's expertise in assembly and test and Shinko's proficiency in materials, the companies will work developing laminate and lead frame products, as well as flip chip and other advanced technologies, including the use of lead- and halide-free materials.
In related news, Amkor Technology received AMD's "#1 Assembly Subcontractor for Year 2000 Award." The award goes to an outstanding assembly subcontractor that contributes significantly to AMD's business success.
Accepting the award, Amkor Senior Vice President of U.S. Sales, Mike Lamble, said, "Amkor Technology is very pleased to receive this prestigious award from AMD. It is the result of a lot of hard work on both sides and was achieved by both teams working closely together." Amkor was one of five suppliers worldwide to receive the award this year.
Delta Group AcquisitionALBUQUERQUE, N.M. EMS provider, Delta Group Electronics Inc. purchased On Board Technology Inc., of Sanford Fla., a full service CM providing cost-efficient assembly of wire and cable harnesses, PCBs and all types of electromechanical assemblies for business partners in Orlando and throughout Florida.
"We are pleased to have completed this transaction that will enable Delta Group to enhance its manufacturing and assembly capabilities and services offerings to better serve our business partners. On Board is a highly respected electronics manufacturing company in the Florida market, and we plan to strengthen and expand this position through the combination of the two companies," said Steve Klein, president.
On Board's President, Kenneth Harrell, will join Delta Group Electronics as a consultant, and all production operations will be integrated into Delta Group's Rockledge, Fla. facility.
Announcement of Training ProgramsWEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. Chase EMS Group has announced the availability of customer training programs to be offered at any or all three of the company's three divisions, in West Bridgewater, Haverhill and Melrose. These training programs will focus on areas ranging from planning, prototyping and design feedback, to supply chain management to SMT/BGA rework.
In the BGA Rework program, attendees are familiarized with BGA design considerations, assembly techniques and repair procedures. Actual hands-on removal and reattachment of BGA devices is performed and BGA reballing is demonstrated. The in-house training program also allows time for each attendee to participate in each process and is geared toward their experience level.
Solectron Receives State RecognitionEVERETT, Wash. Solectron Corp. received Washington state recognition for its involvement in an immigrant education, training and employment program. The award was presented by two statewide programs: WorkFirst, which assists welfare recipients with finding and maintaining employment, and WorkSource, a joint organization that offers resources for business and job seekers.
Solectron's involvement with the WorkFirst program over the last three years has helped to provide technology training with English language programs to first-generation immigrants. Once graduated from the program, qualified candidates are offered jobs with the site and Solectron has hired 60 graduates over the past nine months.
"The people we educate and hire through the program are excellent employees and good people, and we are proud to know that we are making a difference in our community," said Hieu Dang, the site's general manager.
MSL on the MoveCONCORD, Mass. Recent months brought both nominations and appointments of national importance to electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider, Manufacturers' Services Ltd. (MSL). Kevin Melia, founder, CEO and chairman of MSL, was nominated to Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of The Year Awards for the New England region. Subsequently, Dana Waterman was appointed president of MSL's Americas operations.
Since founding MSL in 1994, Melia has grown MSL significantly, securing a place as one of the 10 largest providers in the EMS industry worldwide. MSL operates in 17 sites across North America, Europe and Asia.
According to Larry Davidson, host of the Entrepreneur of The Year
program, "These finalists possess the characteristics that are crucial to successful entrepreneurship, including commitment, leadership vision, innovation, performance, community spirit, empowerment of management and perseverance. They embody the entrepreneurial spirit, and we congratulate them on their accomplishments."
As new president of MSL's Americas operations, Waterman will direct the company's sales and manufacturing operations for North America. He brings more than 20 years of experience to the position, most recently serving as vice president and general manager for Ivensys where he was responsible for worldwide operations of the Thermal Systems Business.
"Dana's experience on the OEM side will provide a valuable perspective for MSL to achieve our goal of delighting every customer," stated Bob Donahue, MSL president and COO. "His proven ability in manufacturing operations and business development is a perfect fit to support MSL's growth in the North America geography as we increase services and expand our customer base." In his new role, Waterman will report to Donahue and be based in MSL's Concord, Mass. headquarters.
